Reports to: Team Lead, Energy Consulting
As a key contributor to our team, the Capital Planning Specialist will bring technical expertise, leadership in the existing building space, and client management to our mission of sustainable building practices. In this role, you'll work with our clients to help incorporate Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs) within their capital plans, while also driving innovation in product selection, unique applications and ECM research & development. As a team, we plan to scale your expertise through people, processes, and tools so that you individually will have more of an impact on sustainability.

Overview of Tasks:
1. Capital Planning
- Act as the primary technical expert for Capital Planning internally, standardizing and continuously improving methodologies.
- Work with clients to integrate sustainability principles within their capital plans.
- Collaborate with the energy modelling team to uncover additional value and opportunity for the clients.
- Leverage your understanding of capital planning to support clients in strategic decision-making.
- Ensure recommendations align with the clients' long-term sustainability and financial goals.
- Meet and work with clients to find optimized solutions.
- Lead internal process improvements, and tool development specific to Capital Planning.
2. Capital Projects & Management
- Liaise between SPG's Consulting and Construction Teams to find optimized solutions to integrate ECMs within traditional capital project implementation.
- Review client capital plans for general accuracy of anticipated costs, budgets and contingencies, working with the Construction Team to gather required information.
- Review suggested ECMs for general accuracy of anticipated costs, budget and contingencies, working with the Consulting Team to gather required information.
- Be an expert and resource for clients with projects underway, helping them understand how to best implement sustainable solutions within their projects.
- Manage and execute a variety of consulting projects (or tasks) to support the full scope of Consulting deliverables, as required, including project site visits.
3. Leadership and Collaboration:
- Build trusting and collaborative relationships with our clients
- Act as a technical leader within the team, mentoring others and driving best practices in capital planning.
- Collaborate with engineers, energy analysts, and other stakeholders internally to identify opportunities for impactful improvements.
- Lead the development of training modules to upskill team members, clients, and partners in sustainable capital planning practices.
4. Product and Process Improvements:
- Design and refine tools and processes to enhance efficiency and scalability in supporting our clients with capital planning
- Drive the improvement of our product offerings, ensuring they remain innovative and client-focused
- Work with the Building Condition Assessment team to improve their reports, process and output to better align with sustainable capital planning processes.
- Stay updated on emerging technologies and best practices inbuilding management, facilities and operations, and sustainable upgrades
What We're Looking For:
- At least 3 years of experience in capital planning (ideally with exposure to energy management and sustainability plans)
- Expertise in developing, assessing and optimizing capital plans
- Strong understanding of capital planning processes, with the ability to translate technical assessments into actionable strategies
- An exceptional problem solver who can use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions
- Client-focus with the ability to build credibility and rapport, and prioritize tasks based on clients' needs
- Technical aptitude for adopting emerging tools and technologies
- Proven leadership abilities and experience mentoring or training others
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills; can translate complex concepts into digestible written, verbal, or visual and can adjust communications for audiences of different levels
- Strong computer skills including proficiency in Office – Excel, Word, Teams & PowerPoint
- A team player who collaborates with others to share knowledge, tackle problems and celebrate shared successes
- A passion for sustainability and the desire to create impactful change in the built environment
- Willingness to travel
An Ideal Candidate Also Has:
- Familiarity with real estate investment strategies
- Experience with construction project budgeting, planning, oversight and reporting
- Professional Engineering license (P.Eng.)
