Job Type: Full-time, Permanent, Hybrid (Office/Remote)
Location: Canada (Calgary, Vancouver, Edmonton or Toronto)
Reports to: Team Lead, Energy Consulting
As a Capital Planning Specialist, you'll bring technical expertise, strong client engagement, and leadership in the existing building space, supporting our mission of enabling sustainable building practices.
You'll work closely with clients to integrate Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs) into their capital plans, while also driving innovation in product selection, unique applications, and ECM research and development. We're committed to scaling your expertise through people, processes, and tools—so that your impact on sustainability reaches beyond individual projects.
This role offers the opportunity to lead at the forefront of sustainable capital planning across a diverse range of facilities—including commercial, residential, and recreational properties. You'll help clients make informed, future-ready decisions through scalable, data-driven solutions.
Grounded in our core values, you'll contribute to a culture of grit, accountability, creativity, and trust while collaborating across SPG's interdisciplinary teams. This is a chance to shape our sustainability services, deliver real impact, and contribute meaningfully to a decarbonized future.
We're a high-impact, mission-driven team with an entrepreneurial spirit—if you thrive in dynamic environments and care deeply about sustainability, you'll enjoy this role.
Overview of Tasks:
1. Capital Planning
- Act as SPG's internal subject matter expert for Capital Planning—standardizing and continuously improving our methodologies.
- Collaborate with clients to embed sustainability principles directly into their capital plans.
- Work with the Energy Consulting team to identify additional opportunities for performance and cost optimization.
- Translate capital assessments into clear, actionable recommendations that align with clients' long-term financial and sustainability goals.
- Lead internal process improvements and contribute to the development of tools specific to Capital Planning.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to clients, building strategies around asset lifecycles and reinvestment priorities.
2. Capital Projects & Management
- Act as a liaison between SPG's Consulting and Construction teams to integrate ECMs seamlessly within traditional capital projects.
- Review client capital plans to validate cost assumptions, budgets, and contingencies in collaboration with the Construction Team.
- Evaluate suggested ECMs for accuracy and feasibility in partnership with the Consulting Team.
- Support clients through ongoing projects, helping them navigate how to implement sustainability measures effectively.
- Lead and support the execution of consulting projects—including site visits and field verifications—as required.
3. Leadership and Collaboration:
- Build and maintain strong, trust-based relationships with clients.
- Provide mentorship and technical leadership within the Consulting team—sharing best practices and fostering a learning culture.
- Collaborate across disciplines (engineers, energy analysts, project managers, etc.) to deliver integrated, high-value solutions.
- Lead the development of internal and external training modules to upskill colleagues, clients, and partners in sustainable capital planning.
4. Product and Process Innovation:
- Develop and refine tools, templates, and processes that improve efficiency and scalability in Capital Planning services.
- Contribute to SPG's product development efforts to ensure solutions are client-focused, data-informed, and sustainability-driven.
- Work with the Building Condition Assessment team to align their reporting and outputs with sustainable capital planning standards.
- Stay informed on best practices, technologies, and trends in building management, operations, and energy upgrades.
What We're Looking For:
We're looking for someone with a strong mix of technical expertise, strategic thinking, and passion for sustainability. You don't need to check every single box—we value learning, initiative, and curiosity.
Minimum Requirements:
- At least 3 years of experience in facilities capital planning and asset management
- Exposure to energy management strategies and/or sustainability planning
- Proficiency in developing, assessing, and optimizing capital investment plans
- Strong understanding of asset lifecycle analysis and long-term reinvestment planning
- Excellent problem-solving skills—able to evaluate complex trade-offs and scenarios
- Client-focused mindset with an ability to build rapport and tailor solutions
- Comfort with digital tools; quick to learn and apply new technologies
- Proven leadership capabilities—experience mentoring, guiding, or training others
- Exceptional communication skills—able to convey technical ideas clearly in writing, conversation, and visual formats
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams)
- Team-oriented approach; thrives in collaborative, cross-functional environments
- Deep personal interest in sustainability and a desire to contribute meaningfully
- Willingness to travel occasionally for project meetings or site visits
Bonus Points For:
- Familiarity with real estate investment strategies and asset portfolio management
- Experience with construction project budgeting, planning, and implementation
- Professional Engineering designation (P.Eng.)
