Senior Software Engineer, Backend (Powered by affirm) Affirm – Victoria, British Columbia, Canada Role Overview The Powered by affirm (PBA) team builds the APIs and solutions that power all of affirm’s integrations with Enterprise Merchants and Partners. We create and manage the APIs and tools that drive checkout and merchant onboarding, and we collaborate with stakeholders to design and build custom end-to-end integrated solutions. What You’ll Do Own and deliver quarterly goals for your team, leading engineers through ambiguity to solve open-ended problems and ensuring everyone is supported throughout delivery. Collaborate with product management, design and analytics throughout the product development lifecycle by participating in ideation, articulating technical constraints, and partnering on decisions that consider risks and trade‑offs. Proactively identify project, process, technology or business issues, advocate for them, and lead in solving them. Support the operations and availability of your team’s artifacts by creating and monitoring metrics, escalating when needed, and supporting “keep the lights on” & on‑call efforts. Foster a culture of quality and ownership on your team by setting or improving code review and design standards, and advocating for them beyond your team through your writing and tech talks. Help develop talent by providing feedback and guidance, and leading by example. What We Look For 4+ years of experience designing, developing and launching backend systems at scale using languages like Python or Kotlin. Track record of developing highly available distributed systems using technologies such as AWS, MySQL and Kubernetes. Experience defining a technical plan for delivery of a significant feature or system component with an elegant, simple and extensible design; writes high‑quality code that is easily understood and used by others. Proficiency at making significant changes in a large code base, and having developed a suite of tools and practices that enable safe, rapid evolution. Demonstrated ownership of personal growth, proactively seeking feedback from team, manager and stakeholders. Strong verbal and written communication skills that support effective collaboration with a global engineering team. Either equivalent practical experience or a Bachelor’s degree in a related field. Salary & Compensation Base pay is part of a total compensation package and may include equity rewards, monthly stipends for health, wellness and tech spending, and benefits (including 100% subsidized medical coverage, dental and vision for you and your dependents). The Canadian base pay range per year is $150,000 - $200,000. Remote Work Policy Affirm is proud to be a remote‑first company.
