Physical Education and Health Education Support Teacher

Full-Time 100%

Under the direction of the Assistant Superintendent of Deeper Learning and Rigour, the Physical Education and Health Education Support Teacher will be responsible for K to 12 Phys. Ed. and Health Ed. supports, professional learning, and assessment practices. This support teacher will work collaboratively with the Sports Convenor and the Divisional Family of Schools (FoS) Support Teachers.

Start Date: September 3, 2024

Responsibilities and duties:

Support building cultures, environments, and practices that ensure that all students of Winnipeg School Division experience belonging, engagement and meaningful learning that will improve their life prospects and flourishing in their catchment school;

Co-design and support responsive professional learning and inquiry opportunities alongside school principals, the Divisional Family of Schools Support Teachers, and Phys Ed/Health Ed teachers;

Strengthen the capacity of educators within all WSD schools to design rich, meaningful learning experiences that provide support and opportunity for all children and youth to engage in learning and school life.

Collaborate with principals, FoS Support Teachers, Learning Support Teachers, and Phys Ed/Health Ed teachers to enhance teachers’ pedagogical practices and approaches to learning experiences;

Support teachers’ ongoing engagement with formative assessment and feedback to plan responsively, support and make visible students’ growth and progress, and communicate student learning;

Decolonize traditionally colonial models of teaching and learning and promote knowledge of Indigenous perspectives and culture;

Use evidence-based educational practices, guiding texts and research to inform the work with children, youth, families, and educators;

Support collecting and communicating stories of powerful learning and engagement in WSD schools;

Coordinate and lead, with the support of the convenor, a divisional council that coordinates and facilitates athletic activities, leagues, and games;

Collaborate with the Sports Convenor to plan, organize, and design a range of sport opportunities for students;

Maintain strong partnerships with Manitoba Education and Early Childhood Learning;

Gather, review, and recommend research, literature, and resources that support educators’ practice;

Represent the division on provincial and inter-divisional professional organizations related to Physical Education, Health and sport;

Liaise with Sport Manitoba and sport governing bodies including MHSAA;

Demonstrate commitment to engagement, excellence, and equity.

Qualifications: Consideration will be given to applicants who have demonstrated the following characteristics and qualifications:

Manitoba Teachers’ Certificate (with Phys Ed/Health Ed certification)

Bachelor of Education (Post Baccalaureate or Masters in Education would be an asset)

Minimum of 5 years successful teaching experience;

Significant experience as a Phys Ed/Health Ed teacher supporting learners with diverse needs;

Experience working as a teacher-leader, IERT, or support teacher an asset;

Deep knowledge of and experience with Phys Ed/Health Ed curriculum, pedagogy and assessment;

Experience teaching a range of grades;

Experience with mentoring, facilitating and/or collaborating for teacher learning;

Knowledge of Manitoba Education and Early Childhood Learning’s curriculum, frameworks, and support documents;

Knowledge of a range of approaches to learning design, assessment practices, co-planning, and co-teaching;

Significant experience in supporting and facilitating learning and conversation around sensitive topics with students, families, and educators.
