We are seeking a Head of Engineering to work full-time, long-term, for our SaaS company. Sprious/Rayobyte operates in the proxy and data scraping industry, helping clients collect billions of data points every day.

You will be responsible for running our entire tech department, comprising of around 15 full-time engineers (Developers and DevOps). Long-term Goal

As a bootstrapped company that has been around for 8 years, we’ve grown as most companies do in this situation: organically and doing the best we can with the resources we have. What has resulted is that after 8 years, our cash cow product (DC / Data Center Proxies) had code piled on top of it, leading to a massive legacy spaghetti code mess. It was intentional, and we knew the dangers. Now it’s time to refactor and modernize ourselves for the next 8 years ahead Like many startup companies, our development standards and procedures didn't scale effectively with our team's growth or weren't consistently enforced. Addressing these issues, our primary long-term goal for this role is to establish a more cohesive development process, ensuring predictability in our estimates and making our plans and progress visible to all stakeholders.

The career path for your role will be CTO if you succeed in being an exceptional Head of Engineering.

Short/Mid-term Goal

While resolving the defined problems may require time to achieve our long-term goal, it's crucial that we progress forward and consistently deliver tangible improvements to our system and product. Therefore, the following goal should be prioritized initially, with the understanding that the long-term goal can be pursued simultaneously. It's not an 'either/or' situation, but rather, while working on that project, we'll also need to review, fix, and implement better development, organization, and communication practices.

The first major project we will seek your leadership on is to modernize our product portfolio. It’s important that we note here: although this is the first and main priority, we are seeking a tech leader who can guide us in many facets of our technology in our company. We are NOT seeking a ‘Team Lead' for this project only, but rather a leader who can help us succeed on this difficult project, as well as provide value beyond that.

This project’s modernization can be summed up like this:

  1. Our Data Center system (you can see it has its own separate login here )
  2. Our residential proxy system (separate architecture, login here )
  3. Scraping Robot (separate architecture, which we want to wrap under the Rayobyte brand going forward: Customer Dashboard )

The end goal would be: All products are under the same architecture, the same user interfaces, the same billing systems, and so forth. The customers will have a cohesive experience.

We’re seeking someone who:

  1. Has been the tech leader in a SaaS company, preferably in a tech leadership role such as Head of Tech or Head of Tech.
  2. Demonstrated leadership experience in a startup environment, showing the ability to navigate through the challenges and uncertainties typical of early-stage companies.
  3. Capable of defining and executing a comprehensive tech strategy aligned with the company's business objectives.
  4. Can work with us full-time. Isn’t afraid to “get into the code”. You may not be writing code, but we are seeking someone who isn’t afraid to get their hands dirty with things like code reviews, DB structure, and coaching our dev teams.

Language requirements: our projects are split between PHP and Node.js. You should be familiar enough to be able to have detailed conversations with our developers during this modernization project.

Has architecture experience: diagrams, database ERDs, etc. You would need to be doing the architecture work for this project.

Feels comfortable and has experience in identifying and resolving technical challenges in a startup environment (as well as balancing short-term needs with long-term scalability and maintainability.), where resources and timelines may be constrained.

Able to build great visibility and communication in a remote environment about the roadmap, milestones, and progress of the tech team.

Has experience not only building proper development procedures and processes, but also effectively implementing and enforcing them. The ideal candidate should demonstrate the ability to ensure team compliance and adherence to established protocols, fostering a culture of accountability and excellence.
