Cave Law is a boutique law and policy advisory firm located in Edmonton that serves clients remotely from across Canada. Cave Law's legal practice focuses on labour, employment, human rights, administrative, constitutional and nonprofit/charity law.
Numerous clients also retain Cave Law to provide non-legal policy research and consulting services regarding various social and economic policy issues, including affordable housing and homelessness, immigration, poverty reduction, inclusive economic growth and the sustainability of the non-profit and charitable sector.

The Role
The Summer Law and Policy Associate will contribute to various law and policy projects between May – August 2025 depending on their availability and areas of interest. Applicants who are enrolled in law school are preferred; however undergraduate or graduate students with prior work experience or academic interests in public policy will also be considered.
This position is flexible and well-suited for law students who are looking for part-time work to complement travel plans or other pursuits during the summer. The Summer Law and Policy Associate can set their own hours, provided agreed-upon deliverables are met. There may be occasional opportunities for the Summer Law and Policy Associate to attend virtual client meetings or qualitative research interviews if that is of interest.
Part-time employment during the school year may also be available for the successful candidate.
Key Responsibilities
The Summer Law and Policy Associate will:
- Assist with qualitative and quantitative policy research (e.g. jurisdictional scans, literature reviews, qualitative interviews with policy experts, basic statistical analysis);
- Conduct legal research in the areas of labour, employment, human rights, constitutional or administrative law;
- Contribute to various publications, blog posts and articles; and
- Monitor law and policy developments that are relevant to Cave Law's practice areas.

Experience and Skills
- An undergraduate degree in social science, economics or a related discipline
- Completion of a minimum of 1 year of coursework in the Juris Doctor program is preferred
- A graduate degree in public policy, public administration, social science, economics or a related discipline is an asset
- Coursework in labour, employment, human rights, constitutional or administrative law is an asset
- Prior policy work experience in government, a non-profit organization or policy thinktank is an asset
- General familiarity with qualitative and quantitative research methods and how they are applied in a policy research environment (e.g. focus groups, surveys, interviews, case studies, public opinion polling, statistical analysis)
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Excellent research, writing and analytical skills
- Effective project management skills, including the ability to deliver projects on accelerated timelines when required
- Comfortable working in Google Suite, Microsoft Office and Adobe Pro and with various technology tools such as Calendly, Doodle and Zoom
- Ability to work remotely and independently and balance competing priorities

Work Location
The successful candidate will work remotely using their own laptop or computer. If the successful candidate is Edmonton-based there will be opportunities for the occasional coffee/lunch.
Compensation
The Summer Law and Policy Associate will be compensated $35/hour. Work hours between May – August 2025 will be negotiated with the successful candidate depending on interest and availability.
