The success of our upstream, downstream and chemical, and corporate divisions is the result of the talent, curiosity and drive of our people. They bring solutions every day to optimise our strategy in energy, chemicals, lubricants and lower‑emissions technologies. Imperial honours diverse backgrounds so we can be a place where people can bring their full selves to work, no matter their identity, race, gender, sexual orientation, age or ability. What role you will play in our team Are you motivated to join Imperial as an Water Resources Engineering Student? If you are passionate about safety, building positive relationships, and working within a strong team environment, then we have the role for you We currently have an opportunity within our Water Resources Engineering team. What you will do The role primarily focuses on the mid to long range (1‑5 yr) planning and design of surface‑water infrastructure to support the water‑management network at the Kearl oilsands site. This work can include catchment‑area definition using software tools (Deswik), modelling of a small watershed (HEC‑HMS) to specified return‑period storm events, determining appropriate water routing considering business needs and regulations, and design of sumps, ditches, culverts and pumps (internal tools, industry best practices). It is responsible for assisting with planning/designing near‑future infrastructure and tying it into the existing and long‑term planned water‑management systems. The types of questions this role would be responsible for solving are: How are we going to move/store water within future areas set for development? What infrastructure (sumps, pumps, discharge lines, etc.) do we need? Where should the water be routed to? When do we need it in place? What infrastructure do we need to keep/modify to ensure existing systems are still effective? How does water infrastructure and areas of focus tie in with other infrastructure (roads, pipelines, utilities)? This role is primarily a planning/design role with the intent to support long‑range plans. Visits to site are recommended throughout the term due to this relationship. Knowledge/school focus of hydrology, hydrogeology, geotechnical engineering, and mining operations is an asset. The position will be dynamic and iterative, requiring problem‑solving skills, the ability to prioritise and frequent optimisation. It is expected that the successful candidate for this role would also support the following types of activities: Work closely with various internal engineering groups Manage various water‑related studies and review findings/recommendations with team to determine next steps (conduct internal design or provide scope to consultant) Work closely with the various stakeholder from field and office – Water Resource Engineer / Hydrologist, Civil Field Engineers, Environment and Regulatory Advisors, Geotechnical Engineers, Civil Engineers, Reclamation Specialists, Mine Planning A successful candidate will have strong communication, collaboration and project‑management skills; supported by a growing understanding (and willingness to learn) of hydrology, hydrogeology, geotechnical and open‑pit mining engineering. About you Skills and Qualifications Working towards a Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering, Hydrology, Hydrogeology, other mining‑related engineering fields Equivalent work experiences an asset Able to work individually, as well as in a team situation, with minimal supervision Preferred Qualifications/ Experience Working knowledge of AutoCAD or Deswik is an asset Experience with HEC‑HMS is an asset Strong Excel skills Strong communication skills Strong planning skills Ability to work in a team setting Enjoys challenging dynamic work Start date: May 2026 Work Term: 12 – 16 Months Location: Calgary, AB Other Considerations We thank all those who apply; however, only those candidates selected for interviews will be contacted.
