We provide diverse programs and research opportunities while consistently producing high-impact research that is among the mosthighly cited in computer science.Your opportunity: Under the general direction of the Director, Information technology, the Research Computing Support Specialist provides research computing support, computer system administration, network administration, programming/scripting and high-level research technical support services for the Systems, Networks and Database group in support of computer science research in these areas.The incumbent assumes the responsibility of a project leader for specific highly complex and highly technical IT projects for the research group(s) by providing technical leadership, system and software expertise, and support to the project.Your responsibilities will include: Leading and planning IT projects Developing project schedules including milestones, critical path, timelines, deliverables and reporting Coordinating tasks for projects and other strategic initiatives with stakeholders Analyzing, troubleshooting and testing highly complex systems Analyzing, recommending and designing internal network solutions to meet client needs Planning and implementing IT systems independently Analyzing business and operational requirements to plan the implementation of new IT systems Serving as a resource on specific issues to a group of specialists Essential Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related discipline, and/or an acceptable combination of education and experience. Minimum five (5) years of recent and related UNIX/Linux system administration experience in a highly technical and complex heterogeneous IT environment developing academic computing solutions preferably for a computing academic discipline. Substantial experience with Linux/Unix at the command-line level, including substantial experience writing, modifying, and correcting sh/bash/ksh scripts on Linux/Unix platform(s). Experience with virtualization/containerization, printing, backups, computational clusters, security, networking, open source software, rackmounted server hardware, databases, automated operating system installs, fileservers/data storage, and technical documentation in a UNIX/Linux environment. Experience analyzing, troubleshooting, and fixing highly complex IT, system and network problems, utilizing strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail, exercised in an environment with frequently changing demands, demonstrating initiative, creativity and flexibility. Must have strong leadership skills, especially the ability to take personal responsibility to establish and maintain the goals and mission of the research group. Ability to work effectively both independently when necessary and on a team in either a member or a team lead capacity. Experience collaborating on IT purchase recommendations and independently costing IT projects where the careful selection and sourcing of specific components is critical for the project's success. Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to deal with people in a tactful and effective manner and the ability to communicate with both technical and non-technical people at their own level, explaining possibly complex technical concepts to a wide variety of people. Demonstrated interpersonal skills under pressure in providing expert technical services to others, including a keen ability and interest in helping research faculty and students, while exercising unfailing good judgment, discretion and tact, both individually and as a project lead. Demonstrated awareness of and commitment to appropriate information security and privacy practices in a research computing environment, including secure software design/scripting, authentication, patching, appropriate use of encryption, log analysis and general secure system administration practice. Excellent time management, prioritization and organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize effectively when working with multiple, often changing, tasks and projects, exercised individually and in leadership of project teams. Ability to learn continually 'on-the-job', on own initiative, often without instructors, courses, texts, or other formal educational resources, to keep abreast of often rapid changes in requirements, softwareand technology, in the context of a highly dynamic leading Computer Science department. Typing/keyboarding ability and ability to lift/move/install desktop and server computer equipment in both office/lab and computer room settings.
