Lawyer – Labour, Employment & Human Rights (Individual) Trans/Non-Binary Rights Advocacy Nova Scotia (“T.R.A.N.S.”) is seeking expressions of interest from lawyers qualified to practice in the Province of Nova Scotia for the role of Lawyer – Labour, Employment & Human Rights (Individual) by 4:00 p.m. ADT on January 18, 2026 . Key Duties The successful candidate will be responsible for handling individual (as opposed to employer) focused labour, employment and human rights cases. The successful candidate will be a new lawyer with a particular interest in 2SLGBTQIA+ human rights and community work. The successful candidate will be a self-starter, and comfortable building their own independent practice under the T.R.A.N.S. banner, and comfortable to build a client base independently. T.R.A.N.S. is a social impact organization that offers sliding scale rates to ensure our services are accessible to a myriad of different clientele, especially to underserved populations and/or the organizations that serve them. Similarly, the successful candidate would be willing to offer a sliding scale rate to individuals, to ensure services are accessible to the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, and particularly the 2STGNC+ (2-spirit, trans and gender non-conforming+) community, who are largely disadvantaged in labour, employment and human rights disputes due to the severe dearth of legal professionals focusing on serving individuals. The successful candidate would be responsible for performing client intakes and forwarding them to the company for conflict check and other considerations. The lawyer would be initially responsible for managing their case load, communications and calendar, with potential for hiring administrative support as their practice grows. Skills and Competencies The successful candidate will be a recent or upcoming graduate, who is looking to grow a community-based practice and work within the space of 2SLGBTQIA+ advocacy and law. The successful candidate is able, or will be able by fall 2026, to independently practice law in the Province of Nova Scotia. There is no minimum experience required for this position, as the successful candidate will be working with and learning from a 2SLGBTQIA+ human rights expert within their role. This position requires a high degree of knowledge on the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, and queer history in Canada, as well as the ability to interact with community in a manner that is culturally competent and trauma informed. The successful candidate will have experience in community work like volunteering in queer spaces, front-line service work, community advocacy and/or organizing, or other community-rooted work serving the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. The 2-Spirit, Trans and Gender Non-Confirming (“2STGNC+”) community have historically faced disadvantage and discrimination in employment and human resources management, which persists even into our modern day. TRANS acknowledges this particular barrier, which is amplified for QTBIPOC+ individuals. While this position is not designated, preference will be given to those who identify as a member of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, with special attention given to the 2STGNC+ community. Applicants are encouraged to self-identify in their covering letter, as lived experience is considered a huge asset to the role. The successful candidate will work in a comfortable office environment, with an office located on a historic property in downtown Halifax. Client meetings will take place in a central office within the public section of the building, with the successful candidate sharing a separate office with the CEO in a secure, private section of the building. The successful candidate will operate independently with very little oversight, setting their own hours and deciding when to work in office, and when to work virtually. They will also manage their own client and work load, with the company having minimal oversight other than conflict checks and general managerial duties. How to Apply Interested candidates are asked to apply via email at by 4:00 p.m. ADT on January 18, 2026. Applicants are asked to provide a resume, and a covering letter outlining their interest in the position. Only successful candidates will be offered an interview; however, all applicants will be contacted with the outcome of their application. Please contact us with questions, concerns, or if you require accommodation to apply. With gratitude; Trans/Non-Binary Rights Advocacy Nova Scotia #J-18808-Ljbffr
