Medical Science Liaison (MSL) Role Overview
A Medical Science Liaison (MSL) plays a crucial role in the effective implementation of the regional field-based component of the Medical Affairs Therapeutic Area (TA) Strategic Plan. This is achieved in collaboration with the MSL team and the Director of Oncology Medical Affairs. The MSL in Oncology serves as a disease state and product expert, responsible for establishing and nurturing professional relationships with Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) in Ontario concerning our client’s products. In this role, the MSL will also prepare and deliver presentations on medical and clinical data related to our client’s products to healthcare professionals, such as physicians, researchers, medical and pharmacy directors, hospital decision-makers, formulary committees, and pharmacists. The MSL’s contributions to the organization are as follows:
- Communication: As an MSL, you will communicate key information about the company and its mission
- Scientific Expertise: Provide essential scientific and clinical information about products; serve as a bridge between Research and the medical community to foster future research opportunities with company products
- Support: Assist the Marketing, Sales, Market Access, and Regulatory Affairs teams by delivering detailed scientific, clinical, and educational support when necessary.
Responsibilities
- Engage with Key Professionals: Work with key oncology professionals at the regional level, sharing up-to-date medical, scientific, and pharmacoeconomic information on the company’s products and therapeutic areas. This helps increase awareness, allowing healthcare professionals to make informed therapeutic decisions through one-on-one scientific discussions
- Develop Relationships: Cultivate working relationships with healthcare professionals who are key influencers and opinion leaders in their respective fields
- Facilitate Clinical Trials: Collaborate with investigators to expedite the process for clinical trials, both company-sponsored and investigator-sponsored. Aid in the collection and development of quality data for the company’s pipeline compounds and products
- Support Advisory Boards: Assist in preparing and executing Regional Advisory Board meetings for marketed products, including giving presentations and leading discussions. Provide a medical resource, enabling the company to gather insights from physicians about the performance of products in the market
- Summarize Key Information: Review and assess scientific publications. Collaborate with the Medical, Market Access, and Marketing teams to develop summaries for Sales Representatives and internal stakeholders. Respond to scientific inquiries, either directly or through Medical Services – Medical Information
- Task Prioritization: Effectively manage multiple therapeutic area (TA) activities and meet needs at national, regional, and local levels. Spending the majority of time in the field, MSLs must work autonomously, identifying key clients such as KOLs and managing their schedules. The candidate must demonstrate the ability to produce high-quality work without daily supervision
- Handling Inquiries: When field inquiries exceed the MSL’s knowledge, the candidate must identify the appropriate contact for resolution and work closely with the Director of Oncology Medical Affairs and Medical Services – Medical Information to stay updated on new medical data for marketed products
- Collaboration: Facilitate productive collaborations with a broad range of stakeholders, including Medical Affairs, cross-functional colleagues, KOLs, and other healthcare professionals. Ensure all activities are non-promotional and comply with regulatory and legal requirements as well as company policies and ethical standards.
Requirements
- A postgraduate degree in medical/biosciences (e.g., M.D., PhD, PharmD, MSc)

- Comprehensive understanding of the pharmaceutical industry and the role of Medical and Scientific Affairs
- Familiarity with local regulations and the Innovative Medicines Canada Code of Ethical Practices

- Expertise or prior experience in the Oncology therapeutic area, with an understanding of commercial operations, including Marketing and Sales strategies
- Experience in clinical research or drug development is an asset
