Length of Assignment: This position is effective immediately and is ending on or about June 26, 2025.

A Specialist Teacher of Students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing (STSDHH) provides assessment, consultation, liaison, and direct instruction services on an itinerant basis or in a Partially Integrated Community Class setting.

Qualifications:

Member in good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers;

Hold Specialist qualifications or equivalent in Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing; and

Hold Specialist qualifications in Special Education.

Major Responsibilities:

To provide regular class/monitoring, and resource and/or withdrawal services to those students identified as Deaf and Hard of Hearing through the Identification, Placement and Review Committee (IPRC) process.

To consult with regular classroom teachers/departments regarding accommodation and modification strategies related to the needs of students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.

To participate in the In-School Team process and the IPRC process as directed by the Principal and Student Service Coordinator.

To consult with school administrators regarding special needs related to students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, i.e. equipment, structural changes, etc.

To coordinate the collaborative development, implementation and evaluation of the special education program for students identified as Deaf and Hard of Hearing, involving all regular and special education staff assigned.

To coordinate the purchase, maintenance and repair of personalized FM systems in conjunction with the board consulting Educational Audiologist and FM Technicians.

To liaise with classroom teachers, special education teachers, principals, parents and other support services on a regular basis regarding the progress of the student who is Deaf or Hard of Hearing.

To liaise with medical practitioners and outside agencies to support appropriate auditory management of the student who is Deaf or Hard of Hearing.

To provide in-service opportunities for classroom teachers, special education teachers and other support services.

To work with teachers and administration to assess students’ needs with respect to personalized equipment for SEA funding.

To carry out other duties as may be assigned by the Administrator of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services and Superintendent of Student Services.

Scope of Operations:

The Specialist Teacher of Students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing will work cooperatively with teachers, special education teachers, principals, regional student services staff, parents and outside agencies.

The Specialist Teacher of Students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing has the authority to advise principals and teachers regarding programs and services as described in Special Education Plan 2016.

Line of Responsibility:

Responsible to the Principal of Student Services and the Coordinating Superintendent of Student Services and Well-Being.

Steps of the Selection Process:

There are three steps to the Student Services Selection Process, each of which assesses candidates on different aspects of their leadership skills and abilities. If successful, candidates will move to the next step of the process.

Step 1: Resume

Step 2: Interview

Will occur after the due date for applications:

The selection of the successful candidate will be based on the total score of all three steps.
