Position Summary The Department of National Defense has a requirement for Joint Support Ships, which are the replacement vessels for HMCS PROTECTEUR and HMCS PRESERVER. The principal role of the JSS is to provide support to deployed naval forces in the form of fuel, ammunition, provisions, and other materiel. This facilitates longer periods at sea in distant waters without reliance on the support of other nations. The JSS will also provide limited sealift and support to operations‑ashore capabilities. Vancouver Shipyards Co. Ltd. (VSY) is the Prime Contractor for these non‑combatant classes of ships being built on the west coast and as such has entered into contracts with Canada. Thales Canada, Defence & Security has been subcontracted by VSY with the role of the Electronic Systems Integrator (ESI) for the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS) non‑combatant shipbuilding projects awarded to VSY. Thales Canada is looking for an Intermediate Shipboard Systems Engineer to join the JSS build program that is currently underway. The systems engineer will be part of a multidisciplinary team that designs, develops, and tests electronic shipboard systems for the JSS program. The work will involve delivering engineering work products, managing subcontractors, and the planning, preparation for, and execution of engineering changes and commissioning and set‑to‑work activities. Key Areas of Responsibility In their efforts to develop and sustain naval systems, Systems Engineers are called upon to integrate a variety of sensors, software, firmware, and apps on commercial and military platforms. The essential functions and responsibilities of a Systems Engineer include tailoring the system engineering process, practices and tools; providing timely and accurate status updates; developing preliminary and detailed designs for system and subsystem elements; identifying, characterizing, and describing issues in the system or its design through problem reports and design reviews; authoring technical documentation to capture the system and subsystem designs including architecture, interfaces, and installation elements; collaborating with stakeholders to ensure designs are consistent with end‑user needs; collaborating with other functions during implementation and integration of the system and subsystem designs; resolving technical issues arising during implementation, integration and testing; and supporting the installation and/or integration testing of the systems remotely or on customer site. Typical Duties Conduct research on assigned shipboard systems, requirements, standards, and new technologies. Produce engineering artifacts including first principles drawings, system schematics, Statements of Work, System Requirements Documents (SRD), problem and technical reports. Take part in Set to Work (STW), Harbour Acceptance Tests (HAT), and Sea Acceptance Tests (SATs) of assigned shipboard systems. Plan, author, and execute integration and acceptance tests. Coordinate and collaborate with a multidisciplinary dispersed team. Minimum Qualifications University or college degree in engineering or a related discipline. Professional Engineer designation or eligibility to acquire such a designation. Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in the design and integration of complex systems in commercial and/or military domains.
