Intermediate Tunnel Engineer – Jacobs , Toronto office Position Summary As an Intermediate Tunnel Engineer, you will work on a wide range of infrastructure projects across Canada and internationally. Your role includes leading design, technical guidance to junior engineers, and project engineering support from proposal to construction. You will provide geotechnical and tunnel input, review documents, and mentor junior staff, while having opportunities for career development within the Tunnel team. Main Responsibilities Perform engineering work throughout planning, design, and construction phases. Provide technical guidance to junior engineers and designers. Act as project engineer on tunnel/geotechnical projects from proposal to construction supervision. Design and specify underground shafts and tunnel components, including excavation support and foundations. Prepare feasibility studies, detailed designs, and technical specifications. Review construction documents and support construction through design changes and submittal review. Support project managers and construction teams with technical input. Mentor and coach junior tunnel engineers. Required Qualifications Bachelor of Science in Civil, Geological Engineering, or related field. Registered Professional Engineer in Ontario. Minimum 5 years of tunnel and geotechnical engineering experience. Proven ability to drive projects from inception to design completion. Advanced knowledge of geotechnical engineering, including soil/rock characterization and groundwater sampling. Experience designing large diameter tunnels for transportation and water/wastewater projects. Experience with risk management, Geotechnical Baseline Reports, and quality control. Competence in ground/structural numerical methods and tunnel design applications. Experience in geotechnical monitoring during tunnel construction. Knowledge of mitigation measures for high groundwater pressure and seismic active zones. Experience in underground construction techniques (TBM, cut‑and‑cover, micro‑tunnelling). Strong written reporting skills and excellent communication in multidisciplinary teams. Flexibility for occasional travel to assignments. Preferred Qualifications Master of Science or Engineering (M.SC./M.Eng.) in Civil/Tunnel Engineering. Experience with transportation and water projects, including tunnels, pipelines, and treatment plants. Familiarity with geotechnical design software such as Settle3D, SHAKE, FLAC, and Plaxis.
