Founded in 2002, the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) is a not‑for‑profit organization tasked with the safe, long‑term management of Canada’s intermediate‑ and high‑level radioactive waste, in a manner that protects people and the environment for generations to come. The NWMO has been guided for more than 20 years by a dedicated team of world‑class scientists, engineers Indigenous Knowledge Holders who are developing innovative and collaborative solutions for nuclear waste management. In 2024, the NWMO selected Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation and the Township of Ignace as the hosts for the site for a deep geological repository for used nuclear fuel. This decision means our office and staff will, in the future, be relocating to Ignace, Ont., and the deep geological repository will be situated in the area near Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation and the Township of Ignace. Infrastructure planning and development are underway to support this transition and ensure that both the community and our employees are well served and supported, now and in the future. Project Officer / Engineer (Environmental Fieldwork Program) Fulltime – One (1) Position Available Position Location: Toronto Head Office – 22 St. Clair Avenue East OR Ignace, Ontario – 304 Main Street Job Summary This is a key role for the successful management of environmental fieldwork contracts, to ensure work is completed on schedule and budget, and meeting regulatory requirements. Reporting to the Manager, Field Data Acquisition, the incumbent will provide environmental contract and project management expertise, and be responsible for the management of environmental fieldwork contracts conducted as part of the Site Characterization Project. Responsibilities Manage a portfolio of large value and technically complex environmental fieldwork contracts. Undertake and be responsible for the planning, scheduling, coordination, and monitoring of assigned projects. Develop project execution strategies in accordance with applicable organizational governance. Provide advice and guidance to others involved in the interconnected and cross project activities. Coordinate contractor activities, including fieldwork mobilizations, deliverables and reporting. Arrange and lead meetings as required to coordinate between internal stakeholders and client functions. Develop reports and dashboards to report on Project status and progress, as required. Monitor compliance of internal and contracted projects to applicable standards, practices, QA/QC policies, and specifications. Verify vendor invoices to support payments. Provide support for contractor dispute resolution process between the NWMO and contractors including making recommendations on how to progress the project. Promote and support a strong safety culture within the NWMO and ensure HSE requirements are met or exceeded. Perform other related duties as assigned. Qualifications A four‑year bachelor’s degree in an environmental or related engineering or science field or an equivalent level of education. A strong practical knowledge in managing environmental fieldwork contracts, including experience and knowledge in best practices related to planning, execution, and closing out of assigned projects. A period of over 8 years is considered necessary to gain this experience. Experience with full contract management lifecycle. This experience should include the management of complex technical projects from concept through to operations and managing the technical aspects of field projects. Comprehensive knowledge of planning environmental field studies, including overseeing development of design requirements. Financial knowledge to provide cost estimates and forecasts relating to fieldwork activities. Demonstrated ability to motivate, influence, and obtain cooperation from a diverse group of internal and external project stakeholder. Experience establishing effective working relationships with contractors and consultants, to resolve issues arising in contracts. Good negotiating skills are required when dealing with contract changes and adherence to contract terms and conditions. Preferred Qualifications P.Eng or P.Geo or alternative relevant professional certification is an asset. Experience with community engagement is an asset. Experience conducting environmental fieldwork is an asset. Experience with regulatory requirements (IAAC and CNSC) related to environmental fieldwork activities is an asset. Must be eligible to work in Canada and must be able to meet security clearance requirements. Candidates residing in the Greater Toronto Area: Office Location – 22 St. Clair Avenue East until their role is required to relocate. NWMO currently operates in a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office (Tuesdays being universal) and 2 days working from home.
