About the role DNV Energy Systems' group has an exciting opportunity for a Power System Engineer (EMT Studies) in its Renewables & Power Grids service area. Our team provides creative, cost‑effective and practical solutions to stakeholders in power generation, transmission, and distribution systems. The Engineer must demonstrate vision and drive and be passionate about contributing to the growth of the Power Systems Advisory business in North America. The ideal candidate will deliver technical insights and provide customers with excellent customer service. This role is based at our DNV office in Toronto (ON) or Montreal (QB), presenting a dynamic hybrid schedule where employees will typically spend three (3) days per week working from a DNV office or client location. Further details regarding role‑specific requirements will be shared during the interview process. The position may also be considered at other DNV offices within Canada. What You'll Do Perform Electro‑magnetic Transient (EMT) Studies such as sub‑synchronous resonance (SSR), control interaction (SSCI), ferro‑resonance, temporary overvoltage (TOV), switching overvoltage (SOV), transient recovery voltage (TRV), harmonic, energization, etc. Develop/tune PSCAD models, perform PSCAD/PSSE model benchmarking analysis. Produce and review technical reports and presentations for external customers. Complete projects on time while meeting quality and budget requirements. Stay up‑to‑date with relevant industry standards such as IEEE, NERC, CIGRE. Develop or modify automation scripts to enhance the efficiency, speed, and accuracy of technical simulations. Contribute to the team’s research and innovative activities in developing new techniques and/or analytical tools. Build and maintain customer relationships, providing technical advisory support for large‑load interconnections. About You What is Required Master's degree in electrical engineering with emphasis in Power System and Control. Hands‑on experience with PSCAD software. Knowledge of inverter‑based resources (Wind, Solar, Battery Storage) and associated control. In‑depth understanding of fundamentals of electric power systems and renewable energy, small‑signal and large‑signal control stability. Strong organizational, interpersonal (written & verbal) skills, problem‑solving and analytical skills. Ability to work in a dynamic team environment. Strong written and verbal English communication skills. Drafting and reviewing internal documents in English to be used throughout North America. We conduct pre‑employment background screening. What is Preferred Active PE License. Doctorate degree with emphasis on Electric Power Systems. Hands‑on experience performing EMT, SSR studies. Experience in scripting languages (e.g., Python, MATLAB) for automation and data analysis. Demonstrable hands‑on experience with one or more power system analysis software packages including PSS/E, DigSilent Power Factory, TSAT, TARA, ASPEN. Knowledge of ERCOT Electricity Market planning & interconnection practices. Knowledge of other Electricity Markets (PJM, MISO, NYISO, ISONE) planning & interconnection practices.
