Employment Type: Full-Time, Permanent About Johnston Fence Contracting Johnston Fence Contracting is a second‑generation, family‑owned fencing company serving Simcoe County, Orillia, Barrie and surrounding regions for over 40 years. We specialize in a wide range of fencing solutions — residential, agricultural, commercial, security, and automated gate systems — and pride ourselves on quality craftsmanship, reliability, and customer satisfaction. Our commitment to excellence and community values has made us a trusted name across Central Ontario. We also have other businesses within our network that are part of the Johnston Group that serve our community. Position Overview We are seeking an experienced, strategic, and hands‑on Corporate Controller to lead and oversee our financial operations. The ideal candidate will help build and maintain a strong financial foundation that supports our growth and ensures long‑term stability — while aligning with our family‑owned, community‑first values. Key Responsibilities Direct and oversee all corporate financial operations, including financial planning, reporting, and corporate finance structure. Manage the preparation and review of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports. Ensure compliance with accounting principles, regulations, and standards — particularly for a construction/contracting environment. Develop and maintain internal control policies, procedures, and systems to safeguard company assets. Supervise the accounting department (AP, AR, payroll), and coordinate with external accountants for year‑end processing. Provide strategic financial input and leadership to support organizational planning and decision‑making. Manage budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes. Oversee cash flow management, ensuring adequate liquidity and financial health. Monitor and analyze financial performance against KPIs; deliver insights and actionable recommendations. Lead the implementation of financial systems and technology improvements to support efficiency and scalability. Oversee tax compliance and filings, ensuring adherence to Canadian federal and provincial laws. Mentor and develop finance and accounting staff, cultivating a collaborative, high‑performing team. Manage reporting and oversight of capital expenditures and project financing to support business expansion. Qualifications & What You Bring Education & Credentials Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field. CPA (Chartered Professional Accountant) designation required. Experience Several years of relevant accounting/financial experience — ideally in construction, contracting, or similar industries. Understanding of intercompany relationships and transaction processing. Strong working knowledge of industry‑specific accounting practices (project accounting, job costing, financial reporting). Familiarity with Canadian payroll, compliance requirements (federal & provincial), tax rules, employment standards, and reporting obligations. Skills Experience with accounting and payroll systems (QuickBooks, Jobber, or external payroll systems) is a plus. Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office — especially Excel. Excellent analytical, organizational, and leadership skills. Strong communication skills, with an ability to translate financial data into actionable business insights. A collaborative mindset and commitment to team development and mentorship. Why Johnston Fence Contracting? Join a stable, established, family‑owned business with over 40 years of history and a strong reputation in the community. Work with a dedicated, skilled team committed to craftsmanship, quality, and customer satisfaction. Opportunity to shape and strengthen financial operations in a hands‑on role that influences strategic decisions and long‑term growth. Be part of a company that values integrity, community roots, and a “get things done” attitude — not just profits.
