Location: Surrey, British Columbia Salary: CAD $42.27 - $52.81 per hour Job Summary We have an exciting opportunity for a Casual Vocational Rehabilitation Counsellor to join our team in Surrey, B.C. Detailed Overview The Vocational Rehabilitation Counsellor (VRC), as a member of an interdisciplinary team, provides individualized employment services to a caseload of clients recovering from mental illness seeking competitive employment in an integrated community setting, in accordance with the Fidelity Scale for Individual Placement and Support (IPS) services and relevant legislation. VRC services include evaluating clients' vocational needs, developing employment plans based on preferences, needs and abilities, conducting job development, direct marketing and job search activities in collaboration with community employers, negotiating job accommodations and workplace agreements, and advocating on behalf of the client in accomplishing their goals of returning to the workforce. The VRC also collaborates closely with Case Managers and other members of the interdisciplinary team to integrate vocational goals into the mental health recovery plan. Responsibilities Assesses and evaluates clients' vocational rehabilitation needs on an ongoing basis through collaborative planning with the client, identify interests, skills and abilities, and facilitating goal setting. Integrates vocational goals into the mental health treatment plan in collaboration with the Case Manager and interdisciplinary team, engaging the client to determine individual needs, potential career paths and suitable supports. Engages directly with community employers to facilitate access to competitive employment opportunities, including strategies to reduce the stigma of mental illness in the community. Coordinates client intake into supported employment services by liaising with referring clinical staff and the Case Manager, conducting intake interviews and ensuring timely assessment and orientation of participants. Conducts job development, direct marketing and job search activities, builds networks with community employers, negotiates job accommodations and workplace agreements, and stays informed about labour market trends. Provides ongoing employment support, including vocational rehabilitation counselling, individual sessions by phone or on-site, group meetings, and on-site job coaching for clients and employers as required. Monitors client progress, revisits goals, communicates progress to the Case Manager and team, and ensures clients are advancing toward their employment objectives. Educates and supports Employers, Case Managers and other mental health providers on vocational rehabilitation principles and the Individual Placement and Support model; participates in education sessions and professional development to improve care. Participates in case, team and industry meetings and in-services, contributing to Centre initiatives and sharing relevant materials. Ensures appropriate coordination of client departures, including file closures and referrals to community or training resources as required. Maintains records and data in approved formats, analyzes trends, and prepares reports to meet standards and regulatory requirements. Maintains knowledge of vocational rehabilitation practices through literature review and consultation with clinical and industry experts. Performs other related duties as required. Education and Experience Bachelor's Degree in an applicable social or health sciences program and two years' recent, related experience providing vocational rehabilitation counselling and job marketing/development to individuals with mental illness or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Eligibility for certification as a rehabilitation professional with a recognized association. Valid B.C. Driver's License - Class 5 and personal vehicle for work-related purposes. Skills and Abilities Basic counselling skills in working with clients with mental illness. Knowledge of psychosocial rehabilitation principles and mental illnesses. Knowledge of the Individual Placement and Support Model. Ability to assess, plan, organize, implement, evaluate and problem-solve. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with co-workers, clients, staff, physicians, families and community professionals. Ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment and as part of an interdisciplinary team. Conflict resolution and program evaluation capabilities. Time management and ability to prioritize workload in a complex and changing environment. Knowledge of pertinent acts and regulations and the ability to apply them in practice. Ability to educate staff, caregivers, community agencies and other health professionals; develop and deliver in-services, presentations, and support groups. Proficiency with personal computers and database management software. Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
