Baytex is seeking a Senior Drilling Engineer with a minimum of 15 years of experience to join our Drilling team at our Head Office in Calgary, Alberta. The Sr. Drilling Engineer will be primarily responsible for Baytex’s unconventional drilling program, providing programs and guidance for the engineering and design, optimization, and execution of drilling operations on exploration and development wells.


Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Manage all personnel and services working on drilling projects and ensure the operations are conducted in a safe, professional, and cost-effective manner.
  • Interact extensively with internal and external stakeholders to generate drilling programs that deliver wells safely, protect the environment, and meet design and cost expectations.
  • Understand and support the regulatory processes for drilling.
  • Support the creation and review of detailed designs of horizontal wells, focusing on directional
  • design, casing/liner design, wellhead equipment design, wellbore stability analysis, drilling fluids and cement design.
  • Provide drilling engineering support to the asset team for evaluations.
  • Research offset wells for learnings and to ensure continuous improvement from competitors and past drills.
  • Take calls and provide ongoing technical support for drilling supervisors.
  • Implement new strategies & technologies to ensure continuous performance improvement.
  • Execute RFP processes for drilling services including generating the RFP document, evaluating bid proposals and contracting services.
  • Generate drilling project AFE’s and manage cost control and reporting, including the review and approval of drilling invoices and ensure tight cost control from field to actuals.
  • Support design, track and analyze KPI’s to improve drilling/completions operations and identify areas to enhance performance and reduce costs.
  • Contribute to strategic asset plans, providing cost/schedule input assumptions related to drilling.


Qualifications/Attributes:

  • Required Bachelor’s Degree in Petroleum, Mechanical, Chemical or related engineering discipline.
  • Professional designation with APEGA.
  • Minimum of 15 years’ experience in drilling unconventional resource.
  • Subject matter expertise in deep horizontal well drilling, wellbore stability, casing design, cementing and performance drilling.
  • Field experience would be an asset.
  • A team player who is results-oriented and enjoys contributing to the team’s goals.
  • Ability to work under pressure, manage multiple priorities, and tight deadlines.
  • Proactive management of planning and execution to ensure safety, quality, schedules, and cost goals are achieved.
  • Exceptional analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills are required.
  • Strong knowledge of all safety regulations and a proven track record of safety leadership.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with both field and office staff, as well as service partners to implement optimization strategies.
  • Demonstrated commitment to behavior-based safety and ensuring incident and injury-free working conditions.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills are required.
