Experience and Role Accountabilities

  • Minimum of ten (10) years of experience in a relevant engineering field or equivalent.
  • Develop safe engineering solutions by utilizing initiative and judgment to perform tasks such as developing designs, analyzing and resolving problems, and interpreting engineering specifications on medium to highly complex assignments.
  • Ensure safety, cost, quality, and time objectives are met by proposing changes in plans and estimated costs, recommending payment for completed work, preparing progress reports, coordinating work schedules, and handling similar tasks.
  • Resolve highly technical and unusual design and field engineering problems by conducting independent studies and analysis, selecting and interpreting information, and recommending safe engineering designs to support successful operations and project completion.
  • Contribute to engineering practice by conducting independent studies and analysis, developing technical standards, exercising judgment in design selection, and providing guidance to other engineering professionals.
  • Provide exceptional customer service by communicating with stakeholders, defining the scope of engineering services, approving technical documentation, and assessing/reporting on work progress against objectives and specifications.
  • Make complex technical decisions, including the establishment of design bases, criteria, and concepts, and manage engineering resources and activities to support major work assignments.


Additional Experience and Role Accountabilities

  • Experience with the design of electrical utility generation systems and demonstrated expertise in utility design solutions within an electric utility environment.
  • Prepare project documentation and deliverables in accordance with engineering and design best practices (e.g., evaluation reports, specifications, proposals, estimates, design bases, calculations, hazard logs, test plans).
  • Develop design work packages including scope, duration, and level of effort estimates.
  • Prepare signed/sealed engineering deliverables as a Professional of Record (PoR) in accordance with regulatory and professional standards.
  • Provide technical assistance and construction support in the field, conducting field reviews as required.
  • Prepare engineering deliverables under the direct supervision of a PoR, ensuring compliance with industry design practices.
  • Design and document electrical systems and equipment for generation stations, following industry standards and practices.
  • Develop detailed design packages, including equipment layouts, single-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, cable schedules, material lists, and external connections, ensuring compatibility with existing station systems.
  • Conduct technical reviews of designs prepared by others following established engineering practices.
  • Prepare reports detailing condition assessments of facility equipment and systems, including evaluations, analyses, and recommendations for addressing deficiencies.
  • Provide technical guidance during equipment installation and commissioning.
  • Prepare or review/approve inspection test plans for factory acceptance tests and site acceptance tests.
  • Develop commissioning test plans and summary documentation.
  • Perform various engineering calculations, including grounding studies, arc flash studies, short-circuit analysis, and cable design.


Additional Education and Skills

  • Ability to provide technical direction to junior engineers.
  • Strong skills in managing design tasks, including scope, schedule, and cost.
  • Ability to develop engineering solutions that add value and facilitate consensus.
  • Effective communication skills, including verbal and technical writing in English, with strong analytical, interpersonal, and presentation abilities.
  • Experience in project management, including estimating, cost control, and project administration.
  • Proficiency in coordinating multiple projects and managing project resources efficiently.
  • Experience in preparing technical specifications for tendering, evaluating tenders, and making recommendations for contract awards.


Must-Have Qualifications

  • Specialty in diesel-generating stations, with P&C expertise.
  • Maintenance engineering experience, including development and refinement of maintenance standards and preventative maintenance instructions.
  • Prior to assignment commencement, the selected candidate must have a sole practitioner Permit to Practice or the use of their firm’s Permit to Practice with Engineers & Geoscientists BC (EGBC).
  • Engineering deliverables must comply with EGBC's Professional Practice Management Plan and Quality Management Pillar.
  • Retention and preservation of all project documentation must adhere to EGBC Bylaws.


Education and Technical Skills

  • Professional Registration: Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo.) with EGBC or another jurisdiction, with eligibility for EGBC registration.
  • Technical Standards: Must use digital sign and seal technology (e.g., Notarius).
  • Software Skills: Familiarity with CAD systems and drawing standards.
  • Industry Tools: Proficiency in standard industry design/analysis software.
  • MS Office: Intermediate skills in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
