A central element of this transformation is the launch of the GridBeats™ Product Line, dedicated to delivering software-defined automation solutions. This initiative integrates advanced technologies and develops distinctive product platforms to address evolving market demands. As part of the Global Engineering organization, we are seeking a passionate and highly experienced Power Systems expert to lead the GridBeats™ R&D Protection and Control Engineering team. The GridBeats™ R&D Protection and Control Engineering Leader will report directly to the GridBeats™ R&D and Operations Leader. Responsibilities Lead a high-performing team: Build and guide a team of highly skilled protection and control engineers with expertise in protection algorithms, filter design, and renewable integration. Inspire and foster a culture of innovation, continuous improvement, and knowledge sharing within the team. Drive grid modernization: Oversee the full project lifecycle for protection and control system design, feature design, specification, simulation, modeling, and implementation, ensuring alignment with organizational processes and procedures. Champion the adoption of technologies such as IEC 61850 for digital substations to enhance grid automation and protection. Develop and implement strategic initiatives to integrate protection algorithms into products using model-based design through to virtualization. Technical expertise and management: Possess deep technical understanding of protection algorithms, automation, and control system design, including fault analysis and system stability. Experience with Matlab/Simulink for model design and power system simulation tools (RTDS, PSCAD, ATP/EMTP), and applying protection principles to relay design and development. Knowledge or experience with metering, Ethernet & serial communications (IEC61850, Modbus, DNP3.0, IEC60870-5-103). Working knowledge of RTDS in hardware-in-the-loop testing. Experience with Model-Based Design for embedded protection relays. Demonstrate strong project management, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. Develop and manage the team's budget, resource planning, and performance metrics. Collaboration and industry leadership: Collaborate with cross-functional teams (hardware, software, product management) to ensure seamless integration of protection and control functionalities within the overall equipment design. Stay current with industry standards and trends in power system protection and control. Establish partnerships with universities to support R&D and represent the organization at industry conferences and technical forums. Experience working with utilities on protection and control system design and implementation. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related field; master’s degree a plus. 10+ years in power system protection and control engineering, with at least 5 years in a leadership role. Demonstrated leadership and team development experience. Proven record of writing and presenting papers at industry conferences. Experience with industry standards and regulations related to power system protection and control. Excellent communication skills with ability to interact with both technical and non-technical audiences. For Canadian based positions, the pay range is between $126,000 – $176,000 CAD annually.
