BDC is seeking an experienced Principal to join our asset management team. As a Principal, you will support our partners in managing investment transactions, overseeing portfolio companies, and driving value creation across the BDC Capital platform. Why Work at BDC? Position Overview As a Principal, you will support partners who lead investment transactions, oversee execution, and manage portfolio company relationships and performance. You will develop your ability to manage portfolio companies, including representing BDC on boards as a director or observer. You will align the board and investors on growth and monetization paths, conduct rigorous due diligence, lead syndication, and execute financing and divestiture transactions. The role requires experience in deal‑making and the ability to build relationships within the investment community, presenting BDC Capital as a first‑class investor. Challenges to Be Met Platform Building Assist in managing the transaction pipeline, quarterly/bi‑annual reports, and providing financial analysis. Support other team members in managing investments. Maintain investment research files, business plans, and other collected information in accordance with BDC’s policies and procedures. Document investment files by monitoring investments, amendments, and disbursements, including financial analysis and forecasting. Portfolio Management, Support & Exit Planning Stay on top of the current portfolio, identify companies that likely raise funds, and relay information to the team. Monitor portfolio performance, compare performance to forecasts and models, and relay opportunities and issues to management. Participate occasionally in investee board meetings as an observer, keeping abreast of developments and escalating relevant information to partners. Assist investees with introductions to potential suppliers, investors, and employees. Support deal teams in developing exit plans for portfolio companies. Deal Making Conduct business plan reviews, support communications with entrepreneurs and investment partners, prepare interview memoranda and recommendations to pursue or decline follow‑on investments. Lead a workstream of due diligence on companies’ market, competition, management, sales, products, cap table, and other relevant factors. Determine and validate performance metrics, creating valuation models, forecasts, and financial pro‑formas. Draft investment memoranda, focusing on financials and market sections. Support partners during investment committee presentations. Analyze technical documentation and work with consultants to evaluate technologies, products, and services. Conduct reference calls with competitors, clients, industry experts, and incumbent or former employees. Develop and maintain expertise in industry markets and business trends. What We Are Looking For Typical Background 3–5 years in a role with structured thinking, financial analysis, and technical expertise. Typical backgrounds include: Finance roles: venture capital, private equity, investment banking, accounting firms. Operator roles: technology startups, industry‑leading corporations, industry specialists. Advisory roles: consulting, law, corporate strategy, corporate development. Bachelor’s degree in commerce, economics, science, technology, engineering or mathematics. Other degrees are viable if the candidate has strong analytical skills. A post‑graduate degree or equivalent certification, completed or in course, is valuable: MBA, financial masters or PhD, CFA. Technical Knowledge Excel skills for building financial models with sensitivity and scenario analysis. Structured problem‑solving and communication techniques. Proficiency in Word, PowerPoint, and other MS‑suite applications. Ability to present to executive audiences. Writing clear, concise investment memos. Technology skills (coding, chemistry, electronics) are an asset. Operational knowledge of any technical industry is an asset. Bilingualism in French and English is an asset.
