Position Overview:

Sunchild First Nation School is seeking an experienced and inspiring Principal to lead our Junior-Senior High Division. The Ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding and appreciation for indigenous culture, values, and ways of knowing. They will be committed to advancing Indigenous education, fostering student success and building strong relationships with students, families and community members.

About Us:

Sunchild First Nation services the community of Sunchild First Nation which is located 65 km northwest of Rocky Mountain House. Sunchild School is a K to Gr. 12 School with 370 students and 70 staff which is divided into two administrative and education teams, an elementary K-6 and Jr. Sr. High. The teaching facilities are well-equipped and offer bright and technology-rich learning environments. The staff is dedicated to student-centred programming that promotes academic excellence and foster an environment that celebrates Indigenous Cree ways and exposes students to opportunities for social and emotional growth.

There is availability in teacher housing close to the school. We have a competitive pension and benefit package, as well as salaries comparable to the provincial school boards.

Responsibilities:

-Being an instructional leader, establishing high standards and expectations for staff and students.

-Foster a culturally responsive and inclusive learning environment that honours Indigenous traditions, traditions, languages, and perspectives.

-Oversee curriculum implementation with a focus on Indigenous knowledge, history, and perspectives.

-Support and empower staff in their professional growth and development, promoting culturally relevant teaching practices.

-Promote positive behaviour management strategies rooted in Indigenous values of respect and responsibility.

-Create and maintain strong relationships with students, parents and the broader community, fostering a sense of partnership and collaboration.

-Managing the staffing needs of the Jr. Sr. High School

Qualifications:

-Possess or be enrolled in a master’s degree in administration, Education Leadership, Curriculum, Special Education or other relevant area.

-At least 3-5 years as a Principal, Vice Principal or combination of and have a proven record in instructional leadership and collaborative management style, preferably in an indigenous education setting.

-Hold a valid Alberta Professional Teaching Certificate

-Solid Understanding of and leadership with current trends in curriculum implementation, instruction, assessment practices and reporting, and improving student learning.

-Demonstrates instructional leadership working collaboratively with professional staff across both Elementary and Jr. Sr. High levels.

-Clear evidence of ongoing professional growth and involvement in professional activities

-A strong commitment to Indigenous students and their diverse learning needs

-Being an instructional leader who will establish high standards and expectations for all students

-Ability to foster intellectual, emotional and social growth in students in a trauma-informed way
