Labour Relations Officer (USW-044-25) – BC Nurses' Union (BCNU) Regular Full‑time – Starting December 2025. Posted November 28 to December 7, 2025. Reporting To: Coordinator, Labour Relations Pay Grade: 5 level 1 ($104,548.80 annually, plus $8,420 salary differential per year) BCNU represents over 50,000 nurses across British Columbia and advocates for safe, quality, public health care for all. Position Overview Responsible for the maintenance, enforcement, and interpretation of collective agreement provisions for assigned bargaining unit(s) located throughout British Columbia; identifying issues of concern to BCNU members. Provides leadership and mentors stewards by sharing the organization of campaigns around workplace and social issues that promote the economic, social welfare, and occupational interests of the general membership in accordance with BCNU policies and objectives. Key Responsibilities Day‑to‑day maintenance, enforcement, and interpretation of collective agreement provisions Advises stewards on interpretation of collective agreement, past practice, labour legislation, union policies and procedures, and other issues. Initiates, presents, and resolves issues or grievances. Plays union’s case at third‑party mediation and arbitration hearings. Negotiates local agreements on shift schedules, daily working hours, mergers, and displacements. Identify and address issues of concern to BCNU members Shares organizing of campaigns with stewards and members around workplace and social issues. Develops, mentors, and advises stewards and members on addressing workplace concerns and determining campaign mix. Participates in the development and delivery of education courses for BCNU members and stewards. Assist the Coordinator in preparing for negotiating the Provincial Collective Agreement Assists in conducting ratification votes, strike votes, and certification votes. Negotiates first contracts and renewal contracts for bargaining units outside the Provincial Collective Agreement. Provides support and information for bargaining. Assist the Organizing Department – participates in the organization and certification of new members and groups. Provide work direction to assigned administrative staff – participates in efficient and cooperative use of resources and personnel. Perform other related duties as assigned . Qualifications Demonstrated understanding of and ability to utilize a member‑centric model by working in an empowering manner with union members and stewards. Good group facilitation skills including flip‑charting, analyzing discussions, and developing campaign plans, and motivating members and stewards to take action. Extensive and progressive experience (3‑5 years) as an active steward processing grievances and presenting grievances to management, facilitating group meetings, organizing membership campaigns, and/or public rallies, group grievances, and media events. External applicants with equivalent experience may be considered. College or university education in Social Sciences, Industrial Relations, Nursing or equivalent. Completion of BCNU provided labour relations training programs preferred. Demonstrated ability to interpret collective agreement language and argue a strong case for redress of problems; ability to explain contract issues to members in writing; good knowledge of nursing employment issues and general environmental conditions of nursing; commitment to trade union philosophy and public health care. Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills enabling effective communication with supervisors, managers, government and union officials, counsel, and labour relations personnel.
