Senior Mechanical Design Engineer Position: Engineering Problem Designer Type: Independent Contractor Compensation: $60–$80 per hour Location: Remote Duration: Approximately 2 months Commitment: 20–40 hours per week About The Job Mercor connects elite creative and technical talent with leading AI research labs. Role Responsibilities Design original, advanced engineering problems requiring creative reasoning and multi-domain integration. Evaluate AI-generated engineering solutions for technical accuracy and adherence to constraints. Identify logical gaps and incorrect modeling assumptions. Provide well-documented solutions using LaTeX for equations and schematics. Maintain high standards of technical precision and conceptual depth. Work independently and asynchronously to meet deadlines while improving AI model performance. Qualifications Must-Have Advanced degree in mechanical, electrical, civil, aerospace, or chemical engineering, or equivalent experience. Experience designing or grading complex analytical problems. Participation in or mentorship for engineering competitions. Research or teaching experience in applied problem formulation. Proficiency in LaTeX for technical document formatting. Preferred Deep understanding of core engineering principles and real-world systems. Ability to communicate step-by-step reasoning and assumptions clearly. Strong intuition for problem difficulty and conceptual progression. Detail‑oriented verification of results and internal consistency.
