The successful candidate will be based in either Edmonton or Calgary and will largely work from home. This position will require some in‑office attendance and travel within Alberta (for meetings, events, etc.) will be required periodically. Team Overview The Advocacy & Engagement branch supports all areas of the AMA by acting as internal consultants to help achieve strategic and business objectives. Our expertise spans strategic communication planning, advocacy, government relations, writing and design, publication management, website and social media oversight, environmental scanning, event coordination and communication logistics. Targeted and sophisticated member engagement is a core strategy that drives the AMA’s success and strengthens our connection with physicians across Alberta. Position Overview This position will: Directly support the Vice‑President in leading the Advocacy & Engagement branch, providing strategic advice and guidance to the team as per the branch plan and wider AMA priorities. Manage, oversee and build capacity by supervising and mentoring direct reports. Serve as the VP’s representative for high‑priority work, especially in areas involving member engagement and internal collaboration. Provide strategic communication advice to in‑house, initiative‑driven teams and committees, bilateral programs and external multi‑stakeholder projects. Work in collaboration with team members, and across AMA branches, to plan and implement strategic communications activities, with emphasis on messaging and strategy. Assist and advise team members in responding to questions and concerns from members, the public, external partners and staff regarding public affairs, advocacy and member engagement matters. Key Responsibilities Provide strong leadership to build and enhance the capacity of the Advocacy & Engagement branch – supervising, coaching and mentoring direct reports, and conducting performance reviews to support growth and excellence. Partner with the VP on public affairs, advocacy, media relations and member relations initiatives under the AMA Business Plan. Serve as VP’s designate for media relations and member engagement portfolios and lead teams in the VP’s absence. Lead communication strategies for major internal initiatives, ensuring integration with external advocacy, public relations, media and government relations plans and maintaining consistent messaging across all platforms and AMA branches. Manage issues and monitor emerging risks and opportunities within initiatives, provide strategic advice and recommendations to the VP and Senior Leadership Team. Oversee production of AMA publications and channels (e.g. Annual Report, Alberta Doctors’ Digest, e‑newsletters, website, intranet, social media), set strategy and editorial plans, oversee content creation, ensure standards and approvals, use analytics to improve impact. Own and manage the President’s correspondence process, directing senior communications consultants to ensure protocol compliance, alignment with AMA messaging on key topics and issues, and continuous improvement through best practices. Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism or political science is required. Minimum of 10 plus years of progressively senior communications/public affairs experience. Minimum 10 years experience with media relations, devising strategy and executing tactics Minimum eight years of demonstrated success in supervising and managing staff in a formal capacity, including performance management, coaching and team development. Solid experience with fundamentals of social media strategy and tactics Proven track record as a strong people leader who builds high‑performing teams and fosters a positive, accountable work culture. Experience in a member association (or similar) environment is a significant asset. Experience in the health care sector is a significant asset. Professional development background through IABC or CPRS is an asset. Skills Demonstrated expertise in strategic communication planning and execution, with a focus on member engagement and change management. Outstanding writing skills, including the ability to tailor messages and approaches for diverse audiences. Proven ability to design and implement member surveys and research initiatives, analyze findings and apply insights to inform strategic planning and program development. Exceptional proofreading and copy‑editing skills with strong attention to detail. Skilled in coaching and guiding team members to improve workflow efficiency and ensure high‑quality deliverables. Strong leadership and supervisory capabilities, with experience managing performance and fostering team development. Ability to navigate complex team dynamics and resolve conflicts effectively. Expertise in coordinating communications across diverse teams and stakeholders to ensure consistency and collaboration in multi‑stakeholder projects. Capacity to manage large‑ and small‑scale projects seamlessly, balancing multiple timelines and priorities. Ability to thrive in a fast‑paced environment with rapidly shifting priorities.
