Fellow in Medical Education (Psychiatry) We are recruiting for Fellows in Medical Education (Psychiatry) to support the teaching of undergraduate medical students and postgraduate residents within Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust (OHFT). These posts are designed to support doctors who wish to make a commitment to education as part of their career. We are offering these roles as a 12-month out-of-programme pause/experience (OOPP/E) to CT1-3 and ST4-7 residents in Psychiatry or as a 12-month fixed term position for residents looking to take time out in between core and higher training. Applications from speciality, associate specialist and specialist doctors are also encouraged. Please note this is a 12 month fixed term contract. Main duties of the job Based in the Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust, the post is aimed at outstanding doctors who wish to pursue a career as a clinical teacher and researcher. It will offer you the opportunity to develop innovations to support clinical education and workplace practice and provide opportunities to build on personal teaching experience, develop expertise in educational theory and practice, and undertake supervised educational research. The roles themselves will involve the direct delivery of existing educational interventions as well as the opportunity to develop new educational initiatives in collaboration with Dr Chris Kowalski (Simulation Training Lead, OHFT) and Prof Kate Saunders (Undergraduate Education Lead for Psychiatry, University of Oxford). Although an enthusiasm for teaching is a prerequisite, no assumptions will be made about formal knowledge of educational theory or practice. Hands-on teaching will be central to the posts, as will a critical engagement with educational issues around providing undergraduate teaching in a changing context, both nationally and locally. Post-holders will be encouraged to develop a sustained commitment to education within their clinical career and to undertake postgraduate study in Clinical Education while in post (with appropriate funding for this being provided). Teaching Teaching will involve two distinct roles one working primarily at the trust level in collaboration with the Simulation Training Lead and the other working in collaboration with the Undergraduate Education Lead for Psychiatry at the University of Oxford. At the trust level, the post-holder will be expected to contribute to the on-going development and delivery of mental health simulation-based education (SBE) and other technology-enhanced training initiatives both for postgraduate trainees and undergraduate medical students. The main duties here will be to: Design, develop and deliver simulation-based educational initiatives. Evaluate the impact of training initiatives and prepare reports for key stakeholders. Contribute to the development of the simulation team within the trust. Support the development of a simulation faculty across the trust and the Department of Psychiatry. Prepare bids for various funding opportunities. The Trust is keen to allow the post-holder to develop teaching programmes that may be specialty specific or of interest to the individual post-holder. At the departmental level, the post-holder will take a supportive role in developing and delivering the in-house teaching programme for undergraduate medical students at the University of Oxford. They will have the opportunity to: Contribute to the medical students formal teaching programme in the Psychiatry block. Support the development and evaluation of new educational packages in psychiatry and psychology for medicine. Contribute to formative assessments. Post holders will be given honorary membership of the Department of Psychiatry. 2. Educational Research Funding will be provided for post-holders to enrol on postgraduate training in Clinical Education should they wish. This will be supported as a key aspect of the role and post-holders will have the opportunity to take part in educational research activities which will support project assignments for postgraduate study. Post-holders will be expected to develop a focused educational research project with the support of a supervisor and will be supported to generate publishable outputs, including conference presentations (national and international) and publications in peer reviewed medical and educational journals. 3. Clinical commitment A clinical commitment of one day per week with the Trust will ensure that post-holders maintain their clinical involvement during the fellowship. Details of this clinical component will depend on the appointees clinical specialty and experience and can be negotiated where appropriate. It will be possible for post-holders to continue to attend speciality specific academic meetings. It is also possible for post-holders to remain on their existing on-call rota throughout the period of the fellowship should they wish.
