Our client is a well-established construction company focused on projects in the Greater Toronto Area. In business for over 20 years, they run a lean team of roughly 30–35 employees — including project managers, project coordinators, estimators, site superintendents, labourers, and accounting staff — and typically deliver projects ranging from $1 million to $25 million. They are COR-certified and known for a close-knit, positive work culture.

This is a hands-on, all-encompassing role for an experienced accounting leader who is comfortable owning the full finance function — accounting, payroll, banking, and HR administration — in a smaller, owner-operated environment. The preferred start date is as soon as possible.

Responsibilities

  • Own the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and supporting schedules.
  • Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, and the general accounting function.
  • Manage full-cycle payroll for salaried, hourly, and unionized employees, including year-end reporting, T4s, T2200s, and related compliance.
  • Oversee employee benefits administration, WSIB reporting, and core HR functions including onboarding, offboarding, personnel files, and vacation tracking.
  • Manage cash flow, banking relationships, bank reconciliations, and the review and authorization of vendor payments and fund transfers.
  • Prepare and review budgets, forecasts, and financial analyses.
  • Oversee construction job costing, WIP schedules, project reporting, subcontractor payments, and holdback administration.
  • Prepare year-end working papers and liaise with external accountants, auditors, banks, bonding companies, insurance brokers, and legal counsel.
  • Supervise, train, and develop accounting staff, and help build out internal controls, policies, and reporting processes as the company continues to grow.

Requirements

  • CPA designation preferred; equivalent experience will be considered.
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally within construction or another project-based industry.
  • Hands-on experience with full-cycle payroll, including both unionized and non-union employees.
  • Experience with construction job costing, WIP reporting, and holdback administration is a strong asset.
  • Comfortable operating in a smaller, hands-on environment and wearing multiple hats across finance, payroll, and HR.
  • Bonus points if you've used Jonas Premier before.
  • Excellent organizational skills and high attention to detail.
