About Alvarez & Marsal
Alvarez & Marsal (A&M) is a global consulting firm with entrepreneurial, action and results-oriented professionals. We take a hands-on approach to solving our clients' problems and assisting them in reaching their potential. Our culture celebrates independent thinkers and doers who positively impact our clients and shape our industry. The collaborative environment and engaging work—guided by A&M's core values of Integrity, Quality, Objectivity, Fun, Personal Reward, and Inclusive Diversity—are why our people love working at A&M.
The Team
The A&M Tax Canada Team offers comprehensive tax advisory services to clients in various sectors and industries. With a deep understanding of the Canadian tax landscape, the team helps clients navigate the complex and evolving tax issues that affect their business transactions, investments, and operations.
The Opportunity
A&M's Tax Incentives practice helps clients access government funding for innovation and capital investment. The practice covers Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED), Canada's clean economy investment tax credits (ITCs), discretionary grants and other incentive programs tied to major capital projects.
You will use your technical background to assess whether projects and equipment qualify, and combine it with tax knowledge to help clients build and defend robust incentive claims.
How You Will Contribute
As a Manager within the A&M Tax Incentives team, you will:
• Assess the technical eligibility of client projects and capital assets under SR&ED and the clean economy ITCs (such as the Clean Technology, Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage, Clean Hydrogen, Clean Technology Manufacturing and Clean Electricity ITCs), including eligible property, processes and project scope.
• Prepare the technical narratives for client SR&ED claims, clearly demonstrating technological uncertainty, systematic investigation, and technological advancement.
• Review project financial summaries provided by clients, and assess costs and classifications for eligibility, including employees, subcontractors, materials and capital expenditures.
• Analyze tax legislation and administrative guidance and apply them to project-specific scenarios, drafting the technical analysis, legislative references and conclusions that support client tax memos and positions.
• Interview clients and their technical teams, onsite and remotely, to collect the pertinent information needed to prepare SR&ED (T661) filings and ITC submissions.
• Gather samples of client supporting documents as claims are prepared, and manage claims to completion, with sign-off by the practice leader and the client.
• Advise and support clients before and during CRA technical reviews and audits, including technical discussions and site visits, and respond to CRA correspondence that challenges the technical aspects of a submitted claim.
• Coach and mentor junior staff to deliver accurate, complete work, and review their work product.
• Stay current on legislative developments, tax authority decisions and program changes, and apply them to complex client situations.
• Identify opportunities to provide other specialty tax services to clients and contribute to thought leadership materials.
• Participate in sales activities and attend business development meetings.
• Maintain the confidential and proprietary nature of client relationships and related work products. Qualifications
• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering (Chemical, Civil, Mechanical, Industrial, Electrical, Petroleum/Oil & Gas, or related disciplines) or Science (Chemistry, Physics, Biology, or related discipline).
• 5+ years of progressive experience in SR&ED and/or Canadian clean economy ITCs or other government incentive programs, with working knowledge of the related legislation, CRA eligibility criteria (including Form T661) and CRA technical review processes. Experience in Canadian corporate tax is also valued.
• Demonstrated experience managing client engagements and leading teams of tax professionals.
• Strong technical tax research and analytical skills, with the ability to communicate complex technical and tax matters to diverse audiences.
• Proven project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and consistently meet tight deadlines.
• Process-oriented approach with excellent documentation skills.
• Strong written, verbal, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Experience managing engagement economics, including budgeting, staffing, and client billing.
• Demonstrated business development and relationship management capabilities.
• Advanced Excel and tax technology proficiency preferred.
• Self-motivated professional with strong leadership, collaboration, and problem-solving skills, who works well both independently and as part of a team.
• Curious about innovation, policy and evolving business needs, and comfortable navigating complexity to uncover value for clients.
