The Faculty of Law, Common Law Section, at the University of Ottawa invites applications for a tenure-track position in the field of technology.

Position Title: Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor and Director of the Samuelson-Glushko Canadian Internet Policy and Public Interest Clinic (CIPPIC).

Area of Expertise and Responsibilities: This unique position combines academic expertise in law and technology with the practical skills required to advance the public interest in cutting-edge technology law and policy issues as Director of the Samuelson-Glushko Canadian Internet Policy and Public Interest Clinic (CIPPIC). The position includes reduced teaching responsibilities and the opportunity to contribute to original research. As Director of the Samuelson-Glushko Clinic, Canada's first and only public interest law and technology clinic, you will play a crucial role. Responsibilities include clinic management and administration, collaborating with the CIPPIC Governance Committee to set priorities, and coordinating and managing activities such as policy development, public interest advocacy, public education, and the training of law students.

The Director is also responsible for CIPPIC's fundraising and promotion, including social media communication and outreach. As Director, you will supervise staff lawyers, intern students, fellows, and volunteer students, and report regularly to the CIPPIC Governance Committee, which is composed of professors and external experts.

Conditions: This vacant tenure-track is open in either the Common Law in French Program, the Common Law in English Program, or both. However, regardless of the program you are applying for, please note that CIPPIC operates in both official languages.

The anticipated start date is July 1, 2026.

Duties: The duties of faculty members include, in various proportions:

  • Teaching activities;

  • Scholarly activities demonstrated by research, literary or artistic creation, or professional activities;

  • Activities related to service to the university community;

  • Supervision of graduate students.

Salary: The base salary for Assistant Professors is $ 99,377 (according to the salary scale in effect on May 1, 2025, Article of the University of Ottawa APUO collective agreement).

Mandatory Requirements: This position requires clinical, policy, or litigation experience in law and technology. Furthermore, you must hold a common law or civil law degree and be a member in good standing of a provincial or state bar.

The University of Ottawa requires that appointees have completed or be about to complete a master's or doctoral degree in law, or a doctoral degree in a related discipline. If you are currently enrolled in an LLM program, you must obtain the degree within six months of appointment. If you are currently enrolled in a doctoral program, your supervisor must confirm that there is a reasonable probability that you will complete your thesis within 18 months of appointment.

Strong communication skills are necessary. Active bilingualism would be an asset. Please note that passive bilingualism in the other official language of Canada is a requirement for tenure.
