Program
The Pain and Medication Management Program is an outpatient interdisciplinary pain program specifically designed for injured workers with who require assessment and management of complex pain issues. The scope of the program includes injured workers prescribed opioids and/or sedative-hypnotics who would benefit from medication management and/or taper/elimination, and Workers with a diagnosis of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome for which sympathetic ganglion blocks may be indicated.
The interdisciplinary team of Physicians, Pharmacists, Psychologists, Physical Therapists and Occupational Therapists work together with the injured worker to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the biopsychosocial factors that contribute to their current pain and responses to that pain. The principles of treatment are self-management and reduced reliance on passive methods of pain management such as medication and massage therapy.
Required
The treatment team and the injured worker will develop an individualized, goal-oriented treatment program which addresses medical, physical, functional, psychosocial and vocational issues. It is the team's responsibility, with input from the WorkSafeBC officer, to determine the treatment components required to overcome the identified recovery and return to work factors to assist the Worker in:
- achieving return to work and/or increased function, and
- a safe, sustainable taper of opioid and sedative-hypnotic medication use.
