About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Business Data Analyst with strong expertise in commercial insurance operations, terminology, and analytics. This position serves as the key link between business and data teams—translating complex business needs into actionable insights that drive strategic decision-making.

The ideal candidate is not a traditional Business Analyst but rather an insurance domain expert with analytical proficiency—someone who speaks the language of underwriting, pricing, and portfolio performance, and can engage effectively with senior leadership to advance data-driven initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the primary liaison between business stakeholders (including VPs and underwriting leaders) and analytics teams.

  • Translate business requirements into precise analytical deliverables aligned with commercial insurance objectives.

  • Lead discussions around key metrics such as submission triage, flow metrics, loss ratios, combined ratios, and technical pricing.

  • Collaborate with reporting and data teams to build and enhance Power BI dashboards and reports that reflect real-world business needs.

  • Validate and interpret insurance data to ensure accuracy and completeness before presenting insights.

  • Present analytical findings in a clear, business-oriented manner to support leadership decisions, broker accountability, and portfolio optimization.

  • Develop and refine Power BI solutions to support underwriting, pricing, and performance tracking.

  • Recommend process and reporting improvements to enhance visibility and operational efficiency.

Must-Have Qualifications

  • 5-10 years of experience in commercial insurance, with hands-on understanding of underwriting workflows, submissions, quotes, and broker management.

  • Proven experience in business-facing analytics, data reporting, or data interpretation (Power BI experience preferred).

  • Strong grasp of commercial insurance concepts such as EML, CAT, technical price, loss ratio, combined ratio, and flow metrics.

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with confidence engaging VP-level and senior stakeholders.

  • Demonstrated ability to translate business needs into data-driven solutions and actionable insights.

  • Strategic business acumen with the ability to identify trends, risks, and opportunities through analytics.

Nice-to-Have Skills

  • Experience working on data modernization or business intelligence initiatives within insurance.

  • Familiarity with SQL or similar data query tools for data validation.

  • Prior experience guiding or mentoring technical teams to ensure business alignment.
