Job Summary
An RA position is available within the Faculty of Applied Science, School of Nursing, at UBC to assist with data analysis and publications of research related to cancer and aging. The RA may be assigned to undertake a range of research tasks including administrative tasks (recording minutes, memos, scheduling meetings, communicating with team members, keeping records), ethics applications, recruitment, data collection, data analysis, writing, reports and papers, and participating in conference presentations or other activities that are associated with further the acquisition, analysis, or dissemination of knowledge.
Organizational Status
The RA will work as a part of Dr. Kristen Haase's research team alongside interdisciplinary and community partners. The PI will supervise the activities performed by the RA.
Work Performed
- Typical Research Assistant Duties and Responsibilities include:
- Assists with academic research.
- Assists with the editing and preparation of manuscripts.
- Assists with duties related to the production of academic journals.
- Meets regularly with the supervisor to discuss research assignments.
- Performs research work in archives, through interviews, online, or other means that are appropriate to assist the supervisor.
- Prepares literature reviews.
- Gathers and analyzes data.
- Prepares materials for HSRB (Human Research Subjects Board) review.
- Manages and replies to project-related correspondence.
- Attends project meetings.
- Assists in the acquisition of research materials from campus facilities.
- Prepares other articles, reports, and presentations.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the supervising instructor.
- Demonstrates respect toward and cooperation with the supervising faculty.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
- Errors in accuracy, judgment, tact, or communication could result in a significant loss of productivity and jeopardize the successful completion of the project.
- Failure to consult and review work in a professional manner will result in ineffective team productivity, and relationships.
- Failure to establish and monitor project schedules will result in an inability to meet deadlines and will delay the completion of the project.
- Errors in accuracy, judgment, tact, or communication could result in a significant loss of credibility and potential success for the project, for the School, and for UBC.
- Errors or omissions in work performed may lead to unnecessary friction between the participants in the project, and disrupt progress, the loss and create a poor professional image. Poor employee morale may also result.
Supervision Received
The RA will work under the direct supervision of the Principal-Investigator (Dr. Kristen Haase), but may also take direction from Co-Investigators. The post holder will be expected to work relatively independently. The PI will provide direction and guidance to the RA.
Supervision Given
The post holder may provide direction and guidance to any p/t undergraduate research assistants or work/learn students employed during the course of the project.
Minimum Qualifications
- Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one's own
- Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one's own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion
Preferred Qualifications
- A first degree in a health discipline or related field preferred.
- Currently enrolled in or planning to commence a UBC Ph.D. program preferred.
- Previous research experience, especially related to gender and wellbeing.
- Possesses good communication and organizational skills.
- A good team player, who can also work independently.
- The successful applicant will preferably have:
- Previous qualitative research and publishing experience
- Experience using Nvivo
