Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada Atlas Power Technologies Full time

About Us

Atlas Power Technologies has been on a nearly 10-year journey developing and commercializing innovative energy storage technology. Specifically, we have developed a proprietary supercapacitor technology similar to a battery but with significant inherent advantages. Supercapacitors offer an incredibly long cycle life, generally over 1 million cycles, compared to only a few hundred to a few thousand for batteries. Additionally, they offer the fastest charging and discharging speeds of any energy storage technology available today.

Now in the commercial demonstration phase of our journey, we are fortunate to have industrial titans taking notice of our company and joining our team, serving as board members and investors. Having raised significant capital over the last few years, Atlas Power has been able to advance and move into its next phase of rapid growth.

We are seeking an exceptional Mechanical Engineer who stands out for their passion and expertise. Join us in our mission to secure the resources necessary to make a lasting impact.

The Role

Atlas Power Technologies is at the forefront of supercapacitor energy storage technology. We are seeking a motivated and hands-on Mechanical Manufacturing Engineer to join our dynamic team. In this role, you will be a key contributor to the design, development, and manufacturing of our advanced supercapacitor modules and integrated energy storage systems.

This position is critical as we transition from component-level product certification to full system-level certification under rigorous safety standards like UL 9540A. You will play a vital role in designing the next generation of our products for compliance, safety, and manufacturability.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the mechanical design of supercapacitor modules and system-level enclosures/racks using SolidWorks, from initial concept through to production.
  • Design and validate effective thermal management solutions (e.g., forced air cooling, plenums) to meet strict performance and safety requirements.
  • Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFM/DFA) to ensure robust, scalable, and cost-effective production processes.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive manufacturing documentation, including detailed drawings, work instructions, and quality checklists, ensuring compliance with our Quality Management System (QMS).
  • Build, test, and validate prototypes to verify that design specifications and regulatory standards are met.
  • Collaborate with external suppliers and machine shops to source and qualify components, ensuring they meet quality and design standards.
  • Identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives in both product design and manufacturing processes.

Requirements

Required Qualifications (Must-Haves)

  • 3+ years of professional experience in a mechanical design and manufacturing role.
  • High proficiency in 3D CAD software, specifically SolidWorks.
  • Familiarity with Product Data Management (PDM) or Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems.
  • Regulated Industry Experience: Proven experience designing products for a regulated industry, with a strong understanding of designing for compliance with standards such as UL, CSA, or CE.
  • Enclosure & Structural Design: Demonstrated experience in designing mechanical enclosures and structural frames, particularly with sheet metal and tolerance stack-up analysis for larger assemblies.
  • Thermal Management: Strong understanding of thermal management principles (conduction, convection, forced air cooling) and experience applying them to electronic or energy storage systems.
  • Hands-on experience with prototyping, building, and testing mechanical and electromechanical systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a meticulous, detail-oriented approach to documentation.

Assets (Nice-to-Haves)

  • Direct design experience with Battery or Energy Storage Systems (BESS/ESS).
  • Specific knowledge of energy storage safety standards, particularly UL 9540A and NFPA 855.
  • Proficiency with simulation tools for Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).
  • Working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Experience with high-voltage DC systems and an understanding of associated safety principles (e.g., creepage and clearance).
  • Experience in customer-facing engineering support, including acting as a technical liaison during design reviews, installations, and troubleshooting.
  • Proven ability to translate customer needs into actionable engineering requirements.
  • Background in Voice-of-Customer (VoC) feedback collection and channeling insights to product, QA, and R&D teams.
  • Experience supporting demonstrations and pilot projects, including technical configuration, data analysis, and validation reporting.
  • Familiarity with technical pre-sales support and assisting business development in customer discussions about system capabilities and integration.
  • Ability to translate site- or application-specific customer requirements into product configurations or design specifications.
  • Experience with on-site technical engagements, including installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting, while representing the company professionally.

Education

  • Technical Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field.
