Location - This role is in-person. Work primarily takes place at North Campus, Edmonton.

Working under the supervision of a physician or medical team the incumbent works on clinical related projects providing project management, audit management and applying specialized research knowledge to provide overall management/coordination (especially Health Research Ethics Board [HREB] applications, amendments, renewals and closing). This includes building and maintaining relationships with health systems, community practitioners, researchers, research stakeholder, the funding agencies and general public. The incumbent will refer any unusual findings or problems related to the research or patient care to the physician. Interaction with patients in obtaining consent, histories, discussing treatment plans or explaining procedures is an integral part of the activities.

The incumbent will have sufficient medical level training to operate independently and oversee coordination of all clinical trials and research within the Emergency Medicine Research Group (EMeRG). Skills gained through normal educational training will be sufficient for the incumbent to establish and/or set up steps and stages in the research or clinical areas involved. The purpose and objective of the activities may be to assess patients, collect data and/or record medical findings.

The incumbent will work closely with PIs, researchers, physicians and other medical staff within the Emergency Department and within the Department of Emergency Medicine, Edmonton Zone, Province and Country wide. The incumbent will facilitate communications between members, manage/coordinate the day-to-day operations of the studies/clinical trials and manage the overall milestones, study enrollment targets, and financial management to ensure completion of the projects.

Overall project management and coordination of research activities including:

  • Ensure all aspects of projects are performed to Good Clinical Practice (GCP) Tri Council Policy Statement Guidelines (TCPS2), Health Canada.
  • Develop and implement work plans to achieve project goals and create, manage and track milestones and timelines.
  • Responsible for Health Research Ethics Board [HREB] submissions (initial submission, amendments, renewals, safety reports, applicable updates and study closure) and resolve all program issues addressed by ethics review.
  • Based on study protocols, establish priorities for the project for the life cycle of the protocol from implementation to close-out.
  • Ensure and establish all research procedures/processes are in compliance with the protocol, TCPS2 guidelines.
  • Ensure all regulatory statements and forms have been forwarded to the sponsor and/or regulatory authorities for each study.
  • Provide support and advice to partners as required and facilitate coordination and cooperation among partners.

  • Requires a minimum of RN or BScN certification and an active Alberta nursing license.

  • Advanced training in epidemiology/research (e.g., MSc, MPH, NP, MScN) desirable.
  • Research experience in acute care (e.g., Emergency Department, ICU, CCU, etc.) preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience using ConnectCare and NetCare.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, communication and facilitation skills, including team leadership and management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and self-motivated.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, administrative and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with policies and procedures at the University of Alberta and within AHS.
  • Working knowledge and experience in computer software applications (e.g., MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, REDCap, G-mail, outlook, internet) is essential.
  • NACTRAC Research Coordinator course will be required within the year along with certification.
  • Training and experience in project management is an asset.
  • Experience in research administration and budgeting is an asset.
