Location - This role is in-person. Work primarily takes place at North Campus, Edmonton.

Located within the School of Public Health at the University of Alberta, the SIRCLE (Settings-Based Intervention Research through Changes in Lifestyles and Environments) Research Lab conducts research with a goal to advance and mobilize knowledge in the area of school and community health. SIRCLE delivers and evaluates school- and community-based healthy living programs throughout Canada and internationally which promotes wholistic health, prevents chronic diseases, and reduces health inequities. SIRCLE works to create systems-level change through projects that foster resilience and empowerment and builds on the strengths of communities. Using both quantitative and qualitative methodologies, SIRCLE research evaluates the process, impact, and outcomes of health promotion interventions.

The Research Coordinator will be responsible for research coordination and associated knowledge mobilization for the Healthy Schools | LINK | Écoles Saines Project within the SIRCLE Research Lab. The Research Coordinator will work closely with the Project Coordinator and Principal Investigator, larger research team, project partners, staff, and trainees to coordinate all research activities including establishing ethics protocols, standard operating procedures for all research objectives, recruitment, data generation, analysis, coordination of knowledge mobilization activities, and managing trainees.

The research program is part of One Child Every Child: A Transformational Child Health Research Initiative that is a Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF) funded initiative. This ground-breaking initiative will transform child health research in Canada, promote Indigenous-led knowledge creation and self-determination, and drive discovery and innovation. One Child Every Child is a Parallel Paths project that has Indigenous and non-Indigenous Paths.

The School of Public Health integrates research, graduate education, and community engagement to improve population health. Its interdisciplinary structure includes academic programs, centres, and research teams focused on tackling pressing public health issues locally and globally. The School is dedicated to creating knowledge, training public health professionals, and advancing evidence-informed policy and practice.

  • Manage all research activities, including coordination, work plan oversight, and standard operating procedures.
  • Facilitate a collaborative research environment including consulting with the PI and research team as well as supervising and mentoring research staff, student trainees, volunteers and/or interns working with the research team.
  • Develop and ensure compliance with study protocols, ethics submissions, and research plans.
  • Oversee recruitment, data collection and analysis, and maintain secure research databases and files.
  • Foster ongoing communication to build research capacity, including coordination of meetings with the research team and community partners.
  • Create knowledge mobilization strategies and products, including the development and contribution to research publications, academic and community presentations, grant applications, and reporting.

Education and Qualifications

  • A Master's degree in a health or related discipline (e.g. public health, nutrition, physical education,

    kinesiology, psychology, knowledge translation, etc.). A doctoral degree (PhD) is strongly preferred.

Experience and Expertise

  • Minimum 3 years of experience working with diverse interest holder groups within public health.
  • Understanding of ethical guidelines and institutional regulations relating to research and funding

    compliance.
  • Strong research skills (e.g., ability to develop research methods and data collection protocols, collect and analyze data and conduct quality analysis/assurance throughout the entire process).

Knowledge and Skills

  • Understanding of the needs of school communities in Canada and of Comprehensive School Health or other health-promoting schools frameworks.
  • Ability to understand multiple perspectives and respond to diverse needs.
  • Ability to interact and engage with key partners and knowledge users in a clear and professional manner.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access) and Google.
  • Proficient in EndNote or other bibliographic database management software.
  • Proficient in NVivo, or other software to support qualitative data analysis.

Research Management and Organizational Skills

  • Strong research management, reporting, and organizational skills with high attention to detail.
  • Self-directed with the ability to work with minimal supervision while achieving specific goals within

    specific timelines.
  • Team player with strong verbal and written communication skills to produce knowledge products (e.g., manuscripts, reports, presentations, grant applications) and manage stakeholder relationships.
  • Possesses strong analytical skills and is process and results oriented.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge and understanding of University of Alberta research services, ethics procedures, and research policies and guidelines is an asset.
  • Experience with Indigenous community-based work is an asset for members of the One Child Every Child research team.
