Controls Specialist – HVAC Systems
We are seeking a highly motivated Controls Specialist to join our product development team. This role is focused on the design, programming, and implementation of control strategies for our custom HVAC systems. The ideal candidate brings a solid background in DDC and PLC programming, strong understanding of HVAC operation theory, and hands-on experience supporting controls across the product lifecycle from concept to commissioning.
This is a cross-functional role requiring collaboration with mechanical, electrical, test, and field support teams to ensure seamless control integration and robust system performance.
The Successful Candidate's Responsibilities Will Include
- Develop and program control logic for HVAC systems using PLCs and DDCs.
- Design and implement configurable firmware/software structures to support diverse system configurations.
- Translate HVAC sequences of operation into practical, reliable, and serviceable control strategies.
- Support QA and validation efforts including unit control testing, simulation, lab testing, and agency certifications.
- Assist field service personnel with troubleshooting, performance tuning, and commissioning support.
- Coordinate with manufacturing teams to ensure design-for-assembly in control panel layouts and wiring harnesses.
- Interface with vendors, customers, and internal stakeholders to define control requirements and resolve technical issues.
- Contribute to multiple new product development projects as well as support existing product platforms.
- Strong focus on standardization of code, object-oriented development and scalability of products.
The Ideal Candidate For This Position Will Have
- Bachelor's Degree or Diploma in Electrical/Instrumentation/Controls Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
- Focus on control systems, embedded software, or HVAC applications preferred.
- 5+ years of experience in controls engineering, ideally within the HVAC or building automation sector.
- Proficient in programming IEC /CODESYS based PLCs (e.g., Carel, Schneider, Siemens, etc.).
- Hands-on experience with BACnet, Modbus, LONtalk, and IP-based communication protocols.
- Strong understanding of HVAC systems, sensors, and control strategies.
- Familiarity with electrical schematics, panel layout, and power distribution.
- Knowledge of UL, CE, and other compliance standards related to controls and electrical safety.
- Excellent problem-solving and diagnostic skills.
- Strong communication and collaboration across disciplines.
- Comfortable using lab tools, simulation software, and troubleshooting platforms.
- Ability to manage workload independently and adapt to evolving project needs.
- A valid passport and willingness to travel within Canada and the U.S. (approximately 5–20%).
The Preferred Candidate For This Position Will Have
- Prior work with HVAC control system design and sequence development and overall system tuning.
- Experience with Variable Frequency drives, ECM controlled motors, stepper motor configuration and coordination.
- Project management exposure or formal training.
- Provide mentorship to team members entering the HVAC field of engineering.
