POSITION TITLE: Occupational Health & Safety Assistant

DEPARTMENT: Human Resources

SUPERVISOR: Health & Safety Adviser

TERMS: Full-Time, Temporary (Backfill)

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The Health and Safety Assistant is responsible for the health and safety administrative duties including some field work. The work will enhance the quality of all safety policies to ensure work-related injuries are reduced and or lessened.

The Health and Safety is committed to providing a comprehensive Health & Safety Program to Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc staff and workers. This includes educating and training all TteS workers in the field of health and safety.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Health and Safety Assistant is responsible for the health and safety administrative duties including some field work and assisting the Health and Safety Advisor. The work will enhance the quality of all safety policies to ensure work-related injuries are reduced and or lessened.

  • Assists with job site inspections and reporting.
  • Assists with job site safety compliance inspections including hazard analysis, safe work procedures, written reports, and recommendations.
  • Assists with monitoring adherence to the company safety program by all Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc employees and subcontractors.
  • Coordinate inspections, investigations, and occupational safety activities with departments.
  • Research occupational safety information to assure the best available methods and equipment are adopted to minimize the hazards in the workplace.
  • Advise on improvements in tracking and reporting procedures.
  • Periodically act as a team leader to special task forces or teams.
  • Order – obtaining quotes and PO's.
  • Track costs and invoices for the budget.
  • Update calendar.
  • Prepare statistics and other information for reporting to the Safety Committee and other groups of interest.
  • Prepare agendas and minutes and other items for meetings i.e., food.
  • Ensure the timely completion of accident/injury/statistics reporting.
  • Report Form 7 to WorkSafeBC.
  • Prepare FAA forms for return to work and it includes follow-ups.
  • Assists with special reports to agencies (e.g., Government of Canada)
  • Track individual timelines for each incident.
  • Review the analysis of accident and injury data, identifying the needs for new or modified occupational safety programs. Check and update the TteS safety management program (i.e., SiteDocs) as well as providing necessary training to employees on the use of SiteDocs.
  • Check for past due certifications and inform workers on re-certifications.
  • Conduct orientations with new workers and new work positions with a checklist and video training.
  • Coordinate training with departments on occupational safety issues.
  • Research, plan, organize and conduct training programs/seminars for Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc supervisors and field employees, regarding WHMIS, Fall Protection, Orientation, Personal Protection Equipment, CPR/First Aid, industry specific related issues, etc. as needed. Helps plan, design, develop, implement, and evaluate departmental occupational safety programs.
  • Design safety standards to conform to industry standards and federal, provincial, and local regulations.
  • Helps to develop and conduct occupational safety training for various workgroups, including evaluation and modification of programs to meet local, provincial, and federal health and safety requirements.
  • Check Fire extinguishers and Emergency Lighting monthly, ensure replacements and repairs are completed.
  • Maintain awareness of amendments to the OH&S Regulations and make recommendations for their implementation, and to present at safety meetings.
  • Help prepare job procedures and safety protocols for job safety analysis.
  • Help form and edit policies.
  • Keeps updated electronic and hard copy files and databases.
  • Perform additional assignments per supervisor's direction.

Professional Certification, Education and Experience:

  • University Degree or College diploma in Human Resource Management, Occupational Health and Safety or appropriate field with 2-5 years of experience implementing and promoting safe work practices and policies; or equivalent of education and experience.
  • Possess current First Aid Responder certificate.
  • Experience with disability management, accident investigation, workplace inspection and job hazard analysis are preferred.
  • Understanding of current legislations, Codes of Practice, Bulletins and other safe work practice requirements and recommendations.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) and workers' compensation legislation (e.g., WorkSafeBC)
  • Experience with office work
  • Experience with First Nations

Skills and Abilities:

  • Physical ability to lift 25lbs.
  • Travel, as necessary.
  • Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals.
  • Overtime as required.

HOURS OF WORK: Normal Day shifts – 7 hours. Non-normal shifts may be required.

PAY GRADE: Starting at $25.98-$28.70 depending on education & experience.
