About the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government

The Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government is a modern treaty government located in the community of hitac̓u on the west coast of Vancouver Island, along the eastern shore of Ucluelet Inlet. Serving a community of approximately 700 members and overseeing nearly 5,500 hectares of Treaty Settlement Land, the Government operates within a government-to-government relationship with Canada and British Columbia. Guided by a strong heritage of sovereignty and stewardship, the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government is committed to responsible, transparent, and democratic governance that strengthens Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ and Nuu-chah-nulth identity and supports long-term community resilience and self-reliance.

The Opportunity

The Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government is seeking a forward-looking, values-driven Chief Financial Officer to provide strong financial stewardship across the organization.

Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer, the CFO works closely with the Executive, Legislature, and Finance Committee, providing financial leadership, advice, and oversight to support transparent governance, informed decision-making, and long-term financial sustainability aligned with community priorities and values.

This is a senior leadership role with direct accountability for the full scope of the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government's financial management. The role combines strategic leadership with hands-on involvement in operational finance, particularly in collaboration with departments across the organization on budget development, forecasting, financial reporting, audit cycles, and system and process improvement initiatives.

The CFO leads and manages the Finance Department and is responsible for strengthening core financial systems, controls, and internal capacity. This includes working closely with departments to support effective budgeting and financial management, as well as oversight of financial reporting, audit coordination, treasury and cash flow management, funding and compliance reporting, payroll oversight, and the development and enforcement of financial policies and procedures.

The CFO ensures compliance with applicable legislation, professional standards, and funding agreements, and prepares and presents clear, accurate financial reports and analysis to the Executive, Legislature, Finance Committee, and citizens, supporting transparency, accountability, and sound financial governance.

The CFO also oversees relationships with external auditors, advisors, and consultants, ensuring accountability, quality of work, and effective knowledge transfer to the organization.

Leadership Experience and Attributes

The ideal candidate will have a bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Commerce, or a related discipline, along with a Certified Professional Accountant (CPA) designation. You will bring 6 to 8 years of directly related financial management experience, including at least 2 to 3 years in a senior financial leadership role, along with corporate and auditing experience and experience developing financial policy.

You have strong knowledge of GAAP and ideally PSAB, and experience working within regulated environments and professional standards. You bring sound professional judgment, a disciplined approach to financial management, and the ability to operate effectively in complex governance contexts.

You bring strong relationship-building skills and professional credibility, and are able to work respectfully and effectively within a complex, community-centred, and government-to-government environment.

Cultural humility is essential to success in this role. Experience working with Indigenous governments or communities is valued; however, a demonstrated commitment to respect, adaptability, ethical leadership, and learning is foundational.

You are able to translate complex financial information into clear, accessible insights for diverse audiences, and bring strong communication skills, sound fiscal discipline, and a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality.

Compensation

This position offers a competitive salary range of $115,384 to $173,076 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications, along with a comprehensive benefits package including extended health coverage, pension, and generous paid leave.

This position may be based remotely, with an expectation of working onsite in hitac̓u for approximately one week per month, as well as additional onsite presence as operationally required.
