Job Description

AECOM Buildings + Places, is seeking a motivated and skilled Mechanical Engineer to help lead buildings projects (commercial, institutional, light industrial facilities). This position is based out of Markham/Thornhill office with opportunities for hybrid work. Some travel to nearby cities may be required. This role offers opportunities for career growth.

AECOM Buildings + Places Canada (B+P Canada) is a vibrant and growing fully integrated team spanning architecture, all the building's engineering disciplines, landscape architecture, urban planning, urban design, economics and asset management for design and infrastructure projects. Project assignments may include, although not limited to: Municipal, Commercial, Institutional projects, Justice, Education and Government.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Mechanical Project Lead responsible for design and construction administration.
  • Independently performs all tasks necessary to complete primary design at the early stages of the project and develops the concept to high quality detailed design, co-ordinates with all disciplines.
  • Designs HVAC, Plumbing, Fire Protection and Controls systems. In-depth knowledge of HVAC (including hydronics) and controls systems preferred.
  • Performs HVAC calculations and analysis using industry programs (Carrier HAP).
  • Performs calculations, conducts design drawing reviews, and field investigations.
  • Ensures design conforms with all applicable codes and client standards. Has working knowledge of industry-related codes and standards (OBC, ASHRAE, SMACNA, NFPA, CSA).
  • Writes/ edits mechanical specifications.
  • Provides technical input to studies and design reports to meet client requirements.
  • Travels to construction sites to conduct mechanical inspections and prepares reports.
  • Must be able to prepare written reports and deliver results in a clear manner to technical or non-technical audience.
  • Performs self-quality control reviews of design calculations or drawings prior to submitting to senior staff for review and verification.
  • Assists with the design and drafting of mechanical systems in 3D such as REVIT on an as needed basis.
  • Well organized, self-directed work habits with a demonstrated ability to prioritize and schedule tasks managing multiple projects simultaneously in a dynamic environment.
  • Strong communication skills, spoken and written.
  • Able to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Benefits from hands-on mentorship from senior engineers while contributing your expertise to live projects.
  • Assists mechanical engineering team manager with mentoring junior engineering staff.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

In order to be considered for this position, candidates must possess no less than:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering + Four (4) years of experience designing HVAC/plumbing/fire protection/controls for commercial, institutional, and light industrial facilities.
  • Demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education may be considered.
  • Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario in good standing.
  • Able to obtain security clearance for government work.

Preferred Requirements:

  • 10+ years of experience with strong consulting industry background.
  • Experience with sustainability standards (LEED, Net Zero, Passive House, Envision) would be considered an asset.
