Position Summary
The Seasonal Museum Manager oversees the comprehensive operations of the Bonnyville & District Museum. This role is responsible for the stewardship of the museum's property and collections, the success of its public programming, and the leadership of seasonal staff. The Manager acts as the primary liaison between the Board of Directors and the public, ensuring all activities align with the museum's mission and the Alberta Museums Association (AMA) standards.
Key Responsibilities1. Operational Leadership & Governance
Manage daily museum operations in alignment with Board-established policies and strategic goals.
Attend Board meetings to provide operational updates and assist in long-term planning.
Represent the museum as the primary spokesperson for both internal and external communications.
Ensure all activities and site operations comply with Alberta Museums Association (AMA) Standard Practices.
2. Collections & Exhibition Management
Direct the care, curation, and documentation of museum collections, ensuring high standards of conservation.
Oversee the development and installation of exhibitions, educational programs, and publications.
Manage visitor services, marketing initiatives, and media relations to enhance public engagement.
3. Site & Asset Stewardship
Supervise the maintenance, security, and safety of all museum buildings, equipment, and grounds.
Coordinate insurance requirements and risk management protocols for the facility and its collections.
4. Financial Development & Advocacy
Develop and manage the annual general budget for Board approval.
Identify, prepare, and submit grant applications to secure provincial and federal funding.
Actively seek financial and in-kind donations to support museum programming and special projects.
5. Human Resources & Team Management
In partnership with the Board Hiring Committee, lead the recruitment, onboarding, and training of seasonal/summer staff.
Provide ongoing performance management, coaching, and support to ensure a productive and safe working environment.
Coordinate staff and volunteer schedules for daily operations and special events.
6. Events & Public Programming
Lead the planning and execution of special events, ensuring the safety and security of all guests, staff, and volunteers.
Pursue professional development (such as the AMA Certificate in Museum Studies or annual conferences) to stay current with industry trends.
Qualifications
Previous experience in museum management, heritage studies, or a related field.
Strong leadership skills with experience in staff supervision and performance coaching.
Excellent grant writing and fundraising capabilities.
Familiarity with Alberta Museums Association standards is highly an asset.
Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
