Description of Position

This is paraprofessional library work of moderate complexity performed at the Brighouse Library. An incumbent provides reference, readers' advisory and programming services to the public, and assists professional librarians in the development and maintenance of collections, databases and web resources. Considerable independent judgement and action are exercised within established guidelines while unusual problems or policy decisions are referred to a superior who reviews work performance for conformance to established procedures and practices and effectiveness of services rendered to the public. The library technician I will have significant experience in cataloguing, collections and acquisitions and will have a focus on workflow of collections; including the handling of new material from acquisitions, sorting of new material to make it available to borrow, inventory control, collections accuracy and maintenance along with catalogue maintenance.

Job Responsibility Details

  • Provides information and assistance to the public on a wide variety of matters and enquiries related to library holdings, activities and operations; explains library organization, policies and procedures; instructs customers in the use of on-line catalogue system, web-based services, computers and printers; directs customers to appropriate materials and refers them to alternate sources where possible; searches on-line catalogue and a variety of reference books and web services to assist in locating specific books, materials, authors or subjects.
  • Plans, prepares and presents story times, book talks and library tours for children, teens and adults; assists in the preparation, development, implementation, presentation and maintenance of library programs for children, teens and adults; assists presenters in program set up and take down.
  • Provides assistance to librarians in the development and maintenance of collections, databases and web resources; merchandises, plans and sets up displays; evaluates and weeds collections as directed.
  • Prepares and maintains a variety of computerized and/or manual records; files reports and statistics related to the work; ensures for the maintenance and repair of equipment and an adequate supply of stationery and related office supplies.
  • Performs related work as required.

Working as part of a Collections team, under the supervision of the Head of Collections, this position will be responsible for cataloguing, creating and editing records, along with;

  • Performing original descriptive cataloguing of resources and/or archival materials
  • Creating and updating catalogue records
  • Conducting authority control of records to ensure discoverability and access to material in the library catalogue
  • Creating, entering and checking metadata for quality control
  • receiving, inventory and records control of acquired new material
  • Overseeing the cataloguing and records processes, correcting and locating errors, reviewing and editing cataloguing records
  • Identifying and analyzing data discrepancies and taking necessary actions to correct errors and take the lead on communicating corrections to staff
  • strong oral and written skills, high level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Excellent internal and external customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Fully proficient in original and copy cataloguing and metadata creation

Additional Qualifications Information

  • Sound knowledge of library rules, regulations, policies, procedures and operations as they relate to the work performed.
  • Sound knowledge of technical library methods, procedures and tools applicable to the work.
  • Sound knowledge of the library's resources and collections, and on-line and web-based services.
  • Sound knowledge of business English, spelling, punctuation and arithmetic.
  • Working knowledge of the computer equipment and software applications used in the work.
  • Ability to assist the public in the location and use of a wide variety of internal and external source materials and bibliographic tools.
  • Ability to effectively use applicable resource materials in conducting information searches.
  • Ability to plan, prepare and present story times, book talks and library tours for children, teens and adults
  • Ability to provide assistance to professional staff in the development and maintenance of collections, databases and web resources.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain a variety of records, files and documents related to the work.
  • Ability to deal pleasantly and effectively with the public, provide information, and interpret and explain library policies and regulations.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and to understand oral and written instructions.
  • Skill in operating common office appliances, including a computer terminal.

Additional Requirements Information

  • Completion of a recognized Library Technician diploma program including computer courses related to the work, plus some related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Schedule

Re-assignments of weekly schedule or daily shift and/or location will take place as operational needs dictate. The initial schedule is as follows:

  • Tuesday 1:45pm-9:15pm
  • Wednesday 1:45pm-9:15pm
  • Thursday 9:00 am-4:30pm
  • Friday 9:00 am-4:30pm
  • Saturday 9:45 am-5:15pm

Sunday and Mondays are rest days.

Rate of Pay

  • $32.50 – $38.19 per hour
