Position Overview

Maple Leaf Nurseries is a wholesale-only nursery specializing in the growing of landscape ornamentals, perennials, ornamental grasses and ferns.

We are seeking a knowledgeable and motivated Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Technician to support the health and quality of our crop production. The successful candidate will conduct daily plant health scouting, monitor pest and disease pressures, and perform pest management activities in accordance with nursery standards and CFIA requirements.

This role requires strong plant identification skills, a solid understanding of pests and beneficial insects, and the ability to follow IPM protocols accurately. The IPM Technician will play a key role in ensuring that all plant materials meet quality expectations before entering the shipping process.

Key Responsibilities

1. Shipping Area Inspection

  • Perform thorough inspections of plants in the shipping zone prior to loading or relocation.

  • Verify plant quality, pest-free status, and compliance with CFIA and CNCP requirements.

  • Flag any non-compliant, infested, or unhealthy plant material.

2. Plant Health Scouting & Monitoring

  • Conduct daily and weekly scouting of production areas, including perennials, ornamental grasses, woody plants, and edible crops.

  • Monitor for insect pests, diseases, weeds, and abiotic disorders, and record findings accurately.

  • Identify pests, beneficial insects, and plant disorders using proper diagnostic methods.

  • Complete the scouting sheets for all plants inspected prior to movement.

  • Report all pest/disease findings immediately to the Plant Health Manager.

3.Pest Management Activities

  • Apply pesticides, biological controls, and cultural practices as instructed by the Plant Health Manager.

  • Follow all pesticide safety procedures and maintain accurate spray records.

  • Mix and apply chemicals responsibly, adhering to label requirements and safety protocols.

  • Maintain spray equipment and ensure proper calibration.

4. Documentation & Record Keeping

  • Maintain complete and accurate IPM records, scouting sheets, spray logs, and monitoring reports.

  • Ensure documentation is compliant with CNCP (Canadian Nursery Certification Program) requirements CFIA Directive D-04-01.

5. Compliance & Safety

  • Follow all nursery safety rules, PPE requirements, and chemical handling procedures.

  • Ensure adherence to provincial pesticide regulations and CFIA nursery compliance requirements.

  • Participate in internal audits and contribute to continuous improvement of IPM practices.

Required Qualifications

  • Diploma or Certificate in Horticulture, Plant Science, Agriculture, or related field (required), OR equivalent practical IPM experience.

  • 2–3 years of experience in nursery, greenhouse, or field-based IPM

  • Strong ability to identify perennial, ornamental grass, woody plant, and edible crop species.

  • Solid command of pest identification (insects, mites, diseases, weeds).

  • Knowledge of beneficial insects and biological control strategies.

  • Experience with pesticide mixing and spray application.

  • Ability to work outdoors and in varied environmental conditions.

  • Availability to work occasional extended hours, including evenings and weekends, as required during peak season.

  • Reliable transportation to and from work is required, as the nursery is located in a rural area without public transit access.

Certifications Required

  • Grower Pesticide Safety Course.

  • Exterminator License (Agriculture/Greenhouse Category).

  • Basic knowledge of CNCP / CFIA Directive D training provided).

Additional Skills

  • Strong communication and teamwork abilities.

  • Competent with record keeping and basic computer skills.

  • Ability to work independently and manage time efficiently.
