The Opportunity

The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is recruiting a Summer Student to join the Regulatory Applications (RA) Branch. In this role, you will work with the Environmental Sciences Applications Team to assess environmental impacts and provide science-based, risk-informed recommendations on energy project applications.

You will gain hands-on experience in air quality, water quality, wetlands, hydrology, fisheries, and wildlife biology while contributing to projects such as coal mining, oil sands, conventional oil and gas, and pipelines. Opportunities may also arise to work with the Enterprise Reclamation Team on reclamation audits.

This role supports environmental management under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA), Public Lands Act, and Water Act, offering practical experience in science, legislation, policy, and stakeholder engagement, while developing data and evidence-based recommendations.

What your day-to-day will look like:

  • Support a multi-disciplinary team with data management, analysis, and interpretation to inform recommendations on regulatory applications, environmental monitoring, research, and policy implementation.

  • Assist in the review and evaluation of EPEA and Water Act applications and submissions.

  • Review and perform audits of EPEA annual reports and mitigation and monitoring programs.

  • Assist with GIS mapping projects to develop geospatial information for water management.

  • Support audits of reclamation applications.

What we're looking for in you:

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's degree program in Biological Sciences, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, or a related field.

  • Experience with environmental data analysis and GIS mapping is an asset.

  • Proficient in MS Excel for data management.

  • Familiarity with environmental impacts of mining and oil and gas projects is an asset.

  • Strong analytical, organizational, and data management skills.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with an emphasis on technical writing.

Additional Information:

  • Proof of enrollment in a registered post-secondary institution including enrollment in the semester following the work term, or enrollment in a registered co-op program will be a condition of hire.
