EDUCATION AND PUBLIC PROGRAMMING ASSISTANT (FULL TIME, CONTRACT)
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The Hangar Flight Museum is looking for a passionate and enthusiastic candidate to join our team as an Education and Public Programming Assistant. This position will facilitate school groups, run youth programs, provide excellent customer service, and help visitors gain a deeper understanding of aviation and its history in Western Canada. Successful candidates should have at least one year of postsecondary education in history, anthropology, art, education, or museum studies and must be able to pass a police background check.
REPORTING
This position reports directly to the Education Manager and Public Programming Manager.
ORGANIZATION
The Hangar Flight Museum is a museum in northeast Calgary that aims to inspire dreams of flight. The Hangar Flight Museum will be a premiere destination to explore, engage, and experience the transformational power of flight. We are storytellers, stewarding and sharing the aviation history of Calgary and western Canada and its impact on our community. The collection holds rare and historically significant military and civilian aircraft.
QUALIFIED APPLICANTS:
This is a grant funded position, therefore the successful candidate must be between 18-29 years of age and must be a current student with intentions of returning to full-time studies in the fall.
Term of work: May 4 – August 22
Key Responsibilities
Program Delivery
- Deliver high-quality STEAM programming to students grades K – 5
- Lead public programs for a variety of ages that inspire dreams of flight
- Assist in special events, public programming, and customer service roles to help foster a warm welcoming and accessible environment
- Develop a personal project related to the education or public programming department that furthers the mission of the museum
- Collaborate with other members of the education staff to create and deliver high-quality programming for special events
Visitor Experience
- Assist visitors at the admissions desk and gift shop
- Assist the Event Manager with facility rental setup as necessary
- Keeping public spaces, gift shop storage, and volunteer kitchen tidy and organized
- Being featured on our social media channels with educational content
Skills and Abilities:
- Experience working with children, youth or seniors
- Ability to deliver exceptional interactive programs
- Cash Handling Experience
- Excellent customer service skills
- Excellent organization and time management
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to work in a small-team environment as well as independently
- Ability to present before small and large groups of all ages and backgrounds
- Ability to exercise good judgement and utilize problem-solving skills
- Ability to adapt and thrive in an ever-changing environment
- Proficiency in English with a secondary language considered an asset
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe Suite and/or Canva
- Criminal record check and Vulnerable Sector Search
Physical Demands:
- Standing on hard floors for long periods of time
- Moving boxes and other support material (supplies, displays, chairs, tables, boxes full of delicate artifacts, etc.)
- Ability to lift at least 25 lbs
Salary
$18 per hour, 37.5hrs per week. Hours will mainly be 9AM-4:30PM. Regularly scheduled shifts include weekends.
