Reporting to the Manager of Occupational Health, Safety & Wellness (OHS&W), The Occupational Health Nurse will work within the Standards of Nursing practice and the RN competencies of the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) and the standards of nursing care of the NBRHC.
Primary responsibilities of this position are to ensure NBRHC and the Occupational Health Service are in compliance with evidence-based best practices and all applicable legislation including but not limited to the Occupational Health & Safety Act. The role of the OHN within the workplace will include clinician, specialist, co-coordinator, adviser, health educator, counselor and researcher.
The ideal candidate will be an energetic, organized, highly flexible team player who can perform with minimal supervision, has excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills with demonstrated professionalism in dealing with confidential and sensitive issues.
Areas of responsibility include but are not limited to:
- Prevention of injury/illness of hospital staff, first aid, treatment, care plans, health advice and assessment
- Development and maintenance of clinical related occupational health and safety policies and programs (ie Respiratory Protection Program, Communicable Disease Protocols)
- Development and annual review of Medical Directives for the Occupational Health Service
- Occupational health surveillance, hazard identification/risk assessments, control strategies
- Coordinator the scheduling of staff within the health service to ensure adequate coverage, coordinating the annual influenza immunization program
- Advisor to staff within occupational health, managers and hospital employees on occupational health related issues
- Health education to the organization related to health promotion and protection
- Counseling for employees to assist in clarifying problems and making informed decisions for positive interventions/referrals
- Researching strategies and evidenced based practices to ensure a healthy workforce
QUALIFICATIONS
Certification/Experience/Knowledge:
- Successful completion of a Registered Nursing degree with current Certificate of Registration issued by the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)
- Current Basic Cardiac Life Support
- Certification as an Occupational Health Nurse with a recognized association is a preferred requirement or demonstrated effort of working towards certification
- Demonstrated Occupational Health Nursing knowledge and understanding of the principles of Occupational Health Nursing through the completion of occupational health nursing education or working towards
- Experience with coordinating schedules and overseeing registered staff is an asset
- Able to demonstrate extensive knowledge of applicable legislation that affects an organization from an employment perspective, such as, Employment Standards Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, WSIB Act and Regulations, Accessibility Act, Human Rights Code, etc.
Skills/Abilities
:
- Demonstrated flexibility, organizational and time management skills in a high pressure environment
- Strong computer skills including proficiency using database management & report generation systems, Meditech, Word, Excel
- Working knowledge of the Parklane database system is an asset
- Demonstrated ability to determine level of urgency, risk, and find opportunity for improvement
- Demonstrated ability to build trusting relationships and influence others to a course of action and resolution
- Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills with strong attention to detail
- Must demonstrate commitment to ensure safety, the safety of fellow workers, patients, volunteers, and visitors
- Must support and contribute to a culture of safety and prevention of adverse health events in this organization
- Good attendance and work record required
- Bilingualism (English/French) is an asset
