Requirements

Job Overview

The Recovery Team Specialist supports the Road to Recovery (R2R) initiative housed within The Earth Commons Institute, which leads an international effort to reverse the decline of North America's bird populations through science-based, interdisciplinary action.

This position serves as R2R's principal connection between R2R and Species Recovery Teams by sharing, facilitating, and promoting R2R's framework to accelerate "Tipping Point" bird species recovery through conservation success. This role blends technical assistance, coordination, and communication—advancing innovative, inclusive approaches to conservation and ensuring that evidence-based decision-making is fully embedded within R2R's recovery framework and implementation strategies.

Duties include:

Direct Technical Assistance

  • Provide direct technical support to R2R species recovery working groups.

  • Design and deliver webinars, virtual forums, and in-person workshops.

  • Develop practical tools, templates, and resources.

Partnership & Coalition Building

  • Coordinate with national and international partners to strengthen and align recovery actions.

  • Represent R2R at meetings and forums.

  • Facilitate and enable implementation of strategies that engage the public and policymakers in evidence-based conservation.

Fundraising & Resource Development

  • Prepare and contribute to grant proposals, research funding applications, and donor communications.

  • Lead or support fundraising campaigns in collaboration with the R2R Team.

Program Oversight

  • Ensure program alignment with Georgetown's mission and funder priorities.

  • Contribute to reporting and accountability processes, budgets, and performance tracking.

Work Interactions

Reporting to the Executive Director of Road to Recovery, the Recovery Team Specialist collaborates closely with biological and social scientists, Species Recovery Team leads and coordinators, and partner organizations. The position provides technical support and training to Species Recovery Teams; enables coordination of Recovery Teams; and partners with non-profits, state and federal partners, and other academic institutions to advance R2R's mission. The position may supervise research assistants, graduate fellows, or interns supporting Species Recovery Team needs.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • A minimum of Bachelor's degree in biology, ecology, environmental science, natural resource conservation, or a related field; however, equivalent work experience will be considered in lieu of an advanced degree

  • At least 7-10 years of relevant professional experience working with a diverse range of partners in the bird conservation or non-profit conservation sector.

  • Experience within the conservation, environmental, or non-profit sectors.

  • Ability to mobilize diverse groups around a common cause.

  • Knowledge of ornithology and field techniques.

  • Knowledge of North American bird conservation challenges and species recovery strategies.

  • Experience implementing conservation solutions.

  • Excellent attention to detail and multi-tasking skills.

  • Strong communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to inspire trust and collaboration.
