Position:
The Transportation Manager organizes all aspects of the transportation department, including the development and monitoring of annual budgets. The primary role of the Transportation Manager involves the safe and efficient management of the student transportation system to and from school on a daily basis.

Qualifications And Preferred Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Logistics, Business or another related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Familiarity with the Education Act, Safety Traffic Act, And the Student Transportation Regulation as they relate to student transportation.
  • Excellent communication skills are expected as there is a need to present a range of information to a variety of groups.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy, great analytical skills and fast learner.
  • Budget and resource management knowledge.
  • Strong organizational, verbal, and written communication skills, computer skills with proven proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel), Gmail, Google Suites, etc.
  • Proficiency with transportation management systems is considered an asset.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure, manage priorities and meet deadlines.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Plan, route, and time safe and efficient urban and rural transportation schedules for regular and special education students to and from school. This is to be done efficiently and effectively according to school and transportation boundaries, school times, and the student's address.
  • Compile and verify computerized data for submission to Alberta Education in conjunction with the annual rural and urban transportation grant application, including manual route verification as necessary.
  • Prepare proposal packages for bussing tenders for rural and urban wards:
  • Organize receipts of tenders.
  • Read tenders at a public opening.
  • Upon completion of the tendering process submit recommendations to the Secretary - Treasurer for submission to the Board.
  • Verify and approve payment of contractor's invoices and parent transportation grants.
  • Train and supervise transportation personnel.
  • Communicate to the Division administrators regarding transportation issues.
  • Implement transportation procedures that are consistent with the decisions and policies of the Division.
  • Attend transportation safety committee meetings, conventions, and seminars to gather knowledge in the transportation industry as approved by the Secretary-Treasurer.
  • Monitor and investigate conflicts between driver/parents/principals as required.
  • Maintain cooperative relations with other Directors/Managers of Transportation in Alberta.
  • Provide revenue and expenditure budget figures to the Secretary-Treasurer for the annual transportation budget.
  • Assist the Superintendent and the Secretary-treasurer in decisions regarding school boundaries, school closures (maintenance problems), and the cancellation of buses due to weather conditions. Contact the media as per policy.
  • Monitor the maintenance and regular inspections of Division owned, school-based vehicles.
  • Investigate bus accidents, verify that the proper procedures were followed, and provide a summarized report to the Secretary-Treasurer.
  • Assist with investigation of school vehicle violations as requested by the Division or legal counsel.
  • Prepare resource materials for schools and parents on transportation practices and policies.
  • Any other duties as assigned by the Secretary-Treasurer.
