Responsibilities
The Infrastructure, Transportation & Parks Department requires a regular full-time Labourer 3 in the Parks Operations Section. In this position, you will assist a tradesperson in planting, transplanting, pruning and related gardening and general park construction and maintenance tasks. You will also assist in a variety of greenhouse tasks and in the absence of the tradesperson, will ensure the watering and fertilizing of greenhouse and nursery stock. You will perform skilled and semi-skilled horticulture tasks which could include; ground-based trimming and pruning, and heavy labouring. In addition, you will operate power tools and hand tools; and perform other general parks maintenance tasks. At times you will be required to act as Lead Hand in assigning and supervising the work of a small group of subordinates engaged in parks weeding, watering, litter collection and repairing vandalism.
Requirements
You will have considerable knowledge of the practices, methods, procedures, tools and equipment used in horticulture and park maintenance and construction; considerable skill in the operation of power and hand tools; considerable experience in general horticulture and parks maintenance work, preferably on a horticulture maintenance and construction crew; and the physical strength, stamina and coordination to perform heavy manual work outdoors in all types of weather. You will have strong public relations skills with the ability to effectively interact with the public, as well as demonstrated leadership skills. A valid Class 5 BC Driver's License is also required. Completion of, or progress towards a Landscape Horticulturist Red Seal Trade Certification, ISA certification or a Natural Land Management certification, or equivalent years of experience in those fields, would be an asset.
Compensation
7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday to Friday
Hours of Work
$33.82 per hour
(January 2024 rates)
