About DocuPet
As the official pet registration provider for more than 250 jurisdictions, DocuPet is the largest and fastest growing pet registration platform in North America.
Our proprietary platform consolidates all pet information into a single place and provides the services for pet owners, community members and animal shelters to ensure pets can be reunited quickly if they become lost.
Beyond our platform, DocuPet offers specialized pet tags, an AI-powered pet tracker, lost pet alert system, and will soon be launching a first-of-its-kind pet parenting mobile app - all aimed to ensure every pet in North America is registered and that each has a safe and happy home.
Our work is very important. More than 6 million pets enter animal shelters every year. Just 10% of those animals are returned to their owners. Effective registration, pet identification, reunification tools, and animal shelter resources, all provided by DocuPet, is the solution that will measurably reduce shelter intakes while providing significant new funding for animal welfare organizations.
A new National Pet Record Search Tool, available for free to all shelters joining our National Animal Shelter Network will be launched in Q2 of 2025. DocuPet has the support of the animal welfare industry, and with astute strategic leadership will become the de facto National Pet Registry program serving tens of millions of pet owners by 2027.
About this role
DocuPet is seeking a highly technical, delivery-focused Scrum Master to support our Core and Data product teams. This role goes well beyond facilitating ceremonies — it is a critical delivery enablement role responsible for improving flow, reducing risk, and helping teams successfully deliver complex back-end, API, platform, and data initiatives.
You will work cross-functionally with Product Management, Software Engineering, Platform & IT, and QA to ensure work is well-prepared, technically understood, and delivered predictably. You'll operate across Agile and non-Agile teams, coaching where appropriate and adapting processes to fit the realities of platform, back-end and data-driven work.
This role requires strong communication and leadership skills to navigate. You'll act as a liaison across Product, Technology, and business stakeholders, providing clear and consistent updates. Additionally, you'll leverage Agile tools such as Jira and Confluence to track progress, drive efficiency, and enhance collaboration. A challenge of this role will be navigating Agile and non-Agile teams, ensuring we're teaching and coaching along the way.
The Scrum Master will be responsible for ensuring high-quality Agile execution, optimizing team efficiency, coaching Agile and non-Agile teams, and fostering an environment where cross-functional teams can deliver their best work to support product outcomes. This position reports directly to the Director of Software Engineering.
What You Will Be Doing
Agile Coaching & Team Enablement
- Coach Core and Data teams on Agile principles with a pragmatic, delivery-focused mindset — prioritizing outcomes, flow, and predictability over rigid process adherence.
- Support teams operating in Agile, hybrid, or non-Agile contexts, helping them evolve toward more effective ways of working.
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement, shared accountability, and healthy delivery practices.
Scrum Ceremonies & Cadence Management
- Plan and facilitate Scrum ceremonies including Sprint Planning, Sprint Estimation, Sprint Reviews, Retrospectives, and Scrum of Scrums.
- Ensure ceremonies are purposeful, efficient, and focused on enabling delivery rather than process overhead.
- Gather, synthesize, and act on retrospective feedback to drive measurable improvements across teams.
Technical Delivery Enablement
- Partner cross-functionally with Engineering Leads, Software Architects, Software QA teammates, and Product Managers to ensure work entering sprints is technically decomposed, sequenced, and sized appropriately.
- Facilitate refinement for back-end services, APIs, platform work, and data initiatives — ensuring acceptance criteria are technically sound and edge cases are considered.
- Ensure non-functional requirements (performance, scalability, reliability, data integrity, security, observability) are explicitly identified and understood.
- Support teams through technically complex efforts such as data migrations, schema changes, backfills, platform refactors, and multi-system integrations.
- Identify when work is not ready for sprint commitment and drive the right discovery, spike, or design activities.
Backlog Readiness & Sprint Execution
- Partner with Product Management to ensure the backlog is well-structured, prioritized, and aligned with business objectives, product outcomes and engineering capacity.
- Coordinate sprint planning to establish clear, achievable sprint goals tied to meaningful outcomes.
- Support thematic sprint planning to keep teams focused on cohesive, high-impact work.
Flow, Capacity & Delivery Management
- Partner with Product & Technology leadership on capacity planning and sprint commitments, balancing delivery pressure with sustainable pace.
- Identify bottlenecks across the delivery lifecycle (intake, grooming, refinement, development, testing, release) and drive improvements to flow efficiency.
- Oversee end-to-end execution of epics and major initiatives, ensuring scope, sequencing, timelines, and quality expectations are met.
Metrics, Reporting & Continuous Improvement
- Define, track, and communicate delivery metrics such as cycle time, throughput, predictability, aging work items, and sprint health.
- Use metrics to facilitate data-driven conversations focused on system improvement — not individual performance.
- Partner with leadership to improve forecasting, predictability, and long-term planning.
Risk & Stakeholder Management
- Proactively identify delivery risks, dependencies, and constraints within epics and sprints.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to mitigate risks and implement contingency plans.
- Act as a clear point of communication for delivery status, blockers, and expectations, fostering transparency and trust.
Tooling & Process Optimization
- Configure and continuously improve Jira and Confluence workflows to support clarity, visibility, and efficient delivery.
- Identify opportunities to simplify processes, reduce overhead, and improve team effectiveness.
What You Should Have
- A degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Scrum Master certification (CSM, PSM I/II) strongly preferred; SAFe or other Agile certifications are a plus.
- 3+ years of experience supporting back-end, platform, or data product teams, delivering cloud-based APIs, data pipelines, integrations, or distributed systems.
- Strong understanding of the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) — from discovery and technical design through implementation, testing, release, post-release validation, and iteration.
- Proven experience shaping technically sound acceptance criteria for back-end services, APIs, and data workflows.
- Comfort interpreting UML and technical diagrams (sequence, system, activity) to surface dependencies and delivery risk.
- Hands-on experience using Jira, Confluence, and similar tools to manage workflows and reporting.
- Experience using delivery metrics to improve team performance and inform planning conversations.
- Strong coaching and mentorship skills, with a track record of improving Agile maturity.
- Excellent collaboration and communication skills across Product, Engineering, QA, Platform, and business stakeholders.
- Comfort operating in ambiguity and helping teams bring structure to complex technical problems.
Bonus Points If You Have
- PMP or PMI-ACP certification
- Experience supporting data quality initiatives, release coordination for data-driven systems, or analytics platforms
- Experience working with hybrid Agile / Kanban models in platform or operational contexts
Benefits
- Comprehensive medical insurance including Health, Dental and Vision
- Flexible PTO
- Fully remote
