The Company operates a managed payroll service model using Ceridian Dayforce. The Manager of Payroll and Benefits will be responsible for ensuring the timely, effective, and efficient administration of the company's payroll and benefits process for all North American based employees. This role will work closely with the HR team who is responsible for employment policies and practices, including with respect to compensation and benefits, which the Payroll team is then responsible for administering in close collaboration with the company's outsourced payroll service provider.

The ideal candidate must have a collaborative, professional, and service-oriented approach when interacting with business partners, utilizing strong communication skills and interpersonal skills and excel at leading teams.

Responsibilitie
Payroll Operations & Compliance

  • Ensuring the payroll and benefits processes are administered efficiently and effectively for all North American Northland Group employees.
  • Ensuring the compensation practices administered are in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations for each applicable jurisdiction for Northland employees within North America.
  • Directing the collection, computing, and documentation of payroll data.
  • Overseeing and reviewing payroll payments and GL account reconciliations.
  • Ensuring records and processes comply with company and legal regulations.
  • Maintaining accurate account balances and detailed records for auditing, including maintaining and enhancing internal controls related to payroll.
  • Leading payroll-related audits with accuracy and timeliness, as well as supporting year-end financial statement audits for payroll-related items.
  • Identifying opportunities to automate or streamline payroll-related processes.
  • Managing and resolving any issues related to payroll.

Team Leadership

  • Supervising the payroll team and assigning duties considering prioritization of work and equitable distribution of the workload across team members.
  • Setting clear performance expectations, fostering a culture of accountability and completing performance reviews aligned with organizational goals.
  • Promoting strong documentation practices to ensure payroll procedures are standardized, clear, and accessible.
  • Creating a culture where employees feel proud and motivated to be a part of the team.

Managed Services Oversight

  • Acting as the primary day to day relationship owner with Dayforce from a payroll and benefits processing perspective and working collaboratively with Human Resources team in effectively and efficiently working with Dayforce as an HRIS service provider.
  • Overseeing required Dayforce configuration changes, ensuring accuracy in rate changes, pay rules, deductions and earning codes.
  • Leading the team, in collaboration with Dayforce, through annual cycles such as year-end, merit increases, and rate changes.
  • Managing the service contract with Dayforce to ensure clear roles and responsibilities, adherence to agreed upon service levels, and review of invoices to manage overall costs.

Stakeholder Management

  • Prioritizing a high standard of service for payroll-related inquiries from business partners and/or employees, including quality of responses and appropriate response times.
  • Analyzing recurring issues that may require escalation or dedicated resources to fix root causes.
  • Partnering with HR to prioritize a strong employee experience, including providing expertise knowledge on complex areas as well as collaborating on appropriate roles and responsibilities during the payroll lifecycle.
  • Coordinating with HR and Accounting to verify employee data and accounts.

Requirements

  • Strong understanding of Canadian and US Payroll laws and regulations
  • Relevant professional certification/designation with respect to Payroll (Payroll Compliance Professional (PCP) and Payroll Leadership Professional (PLP) are preferred).
  • 10+ years in progressively more senior payroll administration and leadership roles with experience managing teams.
  • Experience with Dayforce or similar payroll and HRIS system is preferred.
  • Experience working with Microsoft suite of products, including Dynamics 365, is preferred.
  • Excellent communicator, self-motivated and driven team player with the ability to build relationships and community with coworkers and cross-functional partners.
  • Ability to train, motivate, and manage staff.
